The Calgary Flames (11-14-2) have now won 3 straight games, and are finally starting to look like the exciting young team that was on display last season. Yes, I could still go on about the problems on defense, but they are a little easier to overlook with the offense firing on all cylinders. The Flames scored 13 goals during those 3 wins, and posted a pair of victories against the Stars and Bruins that were very much of the gutsy variety. They came back from 3 goals down to beat Dallas, and then followed that up by scoring very, very late to tie things up against Boston before coming up with the win in OT. It was a little easier on Tuesday night against the Sharks, with the 4-2 win actually a little more comfortable than the score suggests. The Flames are spreading out the scoring right now, and all 4 lines are playing their part in this winning streak. Now if they could just get the defense sorted, they might be able to take a run at the Pacific Division.
The Buffalo Sabres (11-14-3) have spent the past few weeks trying to get back to the .500 mark that they hit back in the middle of November, but they really haven’t been having very much luck. They got very close again when they went on a run where they won 3 of 4, but they have since followed that up with back to back losses on the road in Vancouver and Edmonton. It has been the same old story for Buffalo, as they once again struggled to get any offense going in those 2 losses. If truth be told, a good portion of their goals are coming via the power play, which has struck 5 times in its last 18 attempts. They have a solid power play unit sitting in the top 10 in the league, but that is somewhat negated by a penalty kill unit that is down near the bottom.
