The Capitals (10-4-0) have been a promising team for as long as anyone can remember, but they have been unable to take that next step come playoff time. That all changed last year under Trotz, as this team came alive in the second half, and came within an inch of making it to the Eastern Conference Final. It can be argued that they have looked even better so far this season, and there is a bit of cautious optimism going on in the nation’s capital right now. For too long, this team has relied on the goal scoring exploits of Alexander Ovechkin, but Trotz has also now instilled a defensive mindset that has seen them give up just 2.3 goals per game so far this season. They finally have a good balance between offense and defense, and all without having to rein in the offensive power of their big Russian.
As the season progresses, the Metropolitan Division is starting to show a definite split, with the cream rising to the top. The Philadelphia Flyers (5-7-3) are finding themselves starting to drift away from the upper pack, but it’s certainly not because of any goaltending issues. The tandem of Mason and Neuvirth have done their part for the cause, but it’s tough to have to stand on your head every night because the offense is only managing 1.8 goals per game so far. If you take out the 3-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets the other night, Philadelphia has managed only 9 goals in a 7 game stretch, with all of those ending in defeat. You simply cannot expect to win on a regular basis when you have an offense that is about as anemic as it gets. Things don’t look to be getting any easier in this one, especially given how tight the Caps have been defensively.
