The Flames (8-14-2) have not been able to recapture the magic of last season, which is a big surprise given that the majority of hockey fans thought they would take another step forward this season. The Flames will be returning home after an awful 3-game road trip that saw them go 0-2-1. It was the same old story for Calgary on that trip, as they once again fell flat on defense. The return of Jonas Hiller did nothing to help keep the puck out of their own net, and you feel that Calgary has to make a move for a goaltender if they are going to have any chance of getting back into the playoff picture. The other teams in the Pacific Division are not exactly lighting things up, so there is a chance that the young Flames can claw their way back, but they are going to have to start making a move soon before the hole gets too deep to dig out of.
Facing the Dallas Stars (19-5-0) is not the ideal way for the Flames to return home, as this is a team that has been on fire from the very start of the season. The Stars have to be looking at how Calgary has been playing defensively this season and rubbing their hands in eager anticipation. Dallas are the top scorers in the league, averaging 3.5 goals per game. If the Flames have any chance of getting anything out of this, they are going to have to stay disciplined. Dallas has a power play that ranks number 2 in the NHL right now, although it has only gone 3 for 16 in the past 6 games. The Stars are coming onto this one having won 8 of their last 10 games, and have won 2 straight, with both of those needing OT to decide them. This is a team that does give up goals, though, so this could prove to be a tricky little road trip game for Dallas.
