Stanley Cup Odds in the Week 4 | The Utah Hockey Club is the newest team in the NHL, but they’re a franchise that dates back decades, having started as the original Winnipeg Jets before heading to Arizona to become the Coyotes in 1996.
They’ve fought low attendance, low enthusiasm, and stadium chaos and are still fighting to stay alive.
Now they’re trying to show that Salt Lake City and the state of Utah can support the National Hockey League.
If you look at how well the Utah Jazz – the local NBA team that started life in New Orleans (where the “Jazz” nickname made a lot more sense) have done, turning into a permanent part of the landscape, then there’s hope for the Club.
As we move forward into the young 2024-25 NHL season, let’s look at the latest sports betting odds for each team to in the Stanley Cup and then discuss some of the top contenders.

Winnipeg Jets
If you’re only looking at the standings, you may be wondering why the Jets are so far down the odds list despite starting at an 11-1-0 clip. Well, that sort of hot play is rarely sustainable, and if you look at the Jets’ schedule so far, it’s been heavily loaded with bottom-feeders. They have a lot of talent and speed, and their goal tending is well above average, but there are reasons why they don’t make deep Cup Playoff runs.
^Florida Panthers
The Panthers have started out 9-3-1, but it’s going to be hard for their offense to keep producing at the highly prolific rate it has so far. Teams will figure out how to stop their schemes. A problem the Panthers need to solve is on the back end. Through 13 games, their GAA is an unsightly 3.15. Last year it was 2.41 – the best in the NHL.
^New York Rangers
The Rangers are off to another terrific start at 8-2-1. The question now becomes not just how to find a way to pay goaltender Igor Shesterkin at the end of this season, but also how to keep the offense ahead of him prolific enough to keep him from having to stand on his head for four straight playoff series.
^Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes are 8-2-0 despite almost zero contributions from captain Jordan Staal. He’s doing the work off the puck and back checking heroically, but in 10 games he has exactly one point. Once he gets up and running, this Hurricanes team is going to be scary.
^Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights have a nifty 8-3-1 record to start 2024-25. They also are tops in the NHL in five-on-five goals with 40. However, their shooting rate (13.61%) is unsustainable high – they’ve only created 25.37 expected goals, which means the offense will regress back to statistical reality. Can they keep winning at this clip after that?
^Minnesota Wild
The Wild are blistering opponents right now with an 8-1-2 record. Kirill Kaprizov is in his contract year, and he’s earning that future paycheck right now with an eye-popping 21 points in those first 11 games. The team’s ownership has promised to pay Kaprizov whatever it takes, and that number is growing each night.
^Washington Capitals
The Capitals got to the postseason last year thanks to goalie Charlie Lindgren. Whatever lightning he captured in a bottle hasn’t shown up so far this year. The team added Logan Thompson to take the pressure off him, but Thompson hasn’t been all that good either. Thankfully, the Caps have been scoring plenty of goals, but offense tends to regress as the season goes on.
^Dallas Stars
The Stars gave goalie Jake Oettinger the keys to the vault in the off-season – and he’d earned it with his play last year. Finland proved to be a dangerous destination as they met the Florida Panthers there and saw a 7-2-0 start turn into a 7-4-0 record. Could that twin bill with the Panthers turn into a Stanley Cup Final preview? It certainly could, but Dallas will have to play more consistently to get through the West.
^Tampa Bay Lightning
Special teams have been a problem for the Lightning so far. Yes, they’re off to a 7-5-0 start, but they are only scoring on the power play 20% of the time, and they’re only killing 73.2% of opponent penalties. Those numbers both need to get better for the Lightning really to be considered a contender.
^New Jersey Devils
The Devils are 7-5-2 but still could use more out of Ondrej Palat. The team has had Palat on the same line with Jack Hughes, but through those 13 games, Palat has managed just 16 shots and three points. The Devils don’t have depth at left wing, and Palat’s slow start is making that problem even worse.
^Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks are taking on water at 5-2-3 while they wait for Thatcher Demko to come back. His knee injury has proven frustrating to resolve, and while Kevin Lankinen has done his best in Demko’s stead, he’s not yet a front-line starting NHL goalie.
^L.A. Kings
The Kings had a terrific wing last year in Quinton Byfield, but this year they’ve bounced him around from wing to center and back – and he hasn’t managed a single goal yet. He even had a three-game streak without a single shot on net before he fired three on frame against the Blackhawks. Should they move him back to wing and leave him alone? It sounds like it.
^Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs have all kinds of talent – and all kinds of salary. However, their power play is converting just 10% of the time. That’s the second-worst number in the league. The Leafs should be doing better here, but how long have we been saying that about this team?
^Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are still the favorites right now despite that 6-5-1 start because the sports betting world knows that momentum is fickle in hockey. However, captain Connor McDavid is still out, and he will miss at least another week. McDavid will have some work to do to elevate his team in the West standings.
^Ottawa Senators
Did you know that the Senators have a combined 9-24-2 record over the last three seasons in the month of November? Right now, they’re clinging to a 6-5-0 start, which would be their first non-losing November in a long time.
^Boston Bruins
The Bruins are just 6-6-1, a surprising start for a team that has been one of the NHL’s elite in recent seasons. David Pastrnak and Justin Brazeau are the only two B’s with more than three goals, which means that when the goaltenders don’t stand on their heads, the Bruins are likely to lose.
