Much was expected of a Calgary Flames (2-7-0) team who surprised everyone last year with their squad made up of young guns. The feeling was that with a full season under their belts, the young guys would take a big step forward this year. It hasn’t happened yet, though, and the play of the Flames has been lackluster at best. The biggest problem for Calgary through their first 9 games of the season has been the sloppy play of the defense and their goaltending. The latter has been particularly poor, causing the team to put Karri Ramo on waivers, which he eventually cleared before being sent down to the minors. Joni Ortio took his spot, but didn’t fare much better in his opening game, a 4-0 loss on the road to the Islanders. There is still plenty of time for the Flames to get things turned around, but that is not going to happen until they tighten up at the back.
The Ottawa Senators (3-3-2) were a lot like the Flames last season in that they seemed to bottle up some sort of magic that allowed them to unexpectedly battle their way into the playoffs. They have also struggled to recapture the form that made them so exciting to watch towards the end of last season, and they come into this one having lost 4 straight games. The Senators are losing a lot of close ones this season, which is exactly the type of games they were winning with stunning regularity at the tail end of last season. Two of their last 4 defeats have been via shootout, and while that means that they are still able to pick up some points, it really isn’t enough to help them keep pace in the Atlantic Division. The Senators are sitting in the middle of the pack in most of the major stats, and they will have to find a way to start moving up if they are to recapture the magic of last season.
