It has been a perfect start to the season for the Montreal Canadiens (7-0-0), as they have made it through their first 7 games of the year unbeaten, and playing a style of hockey that is going to make them very tough to beat. We always knew that they would be very good defensively, but they have also been scoring over 3 goals per game to start the season, 6th best in the NHL. It still all comes back to that defense, though, and as long as the Canadiens continue on their current 1 goal against per game average, they are likely to continue winning. While the results for Montreal have been perfect so far, they are certainly not a perfect team. Their one major negative right now is their power play, which has only connected a little over 14% of the time. If they can put that together, this might well be the team that sets the bar the rest have to try and attain.
The Toronto Maple Leafs (1-3-2) have only managed a single win so far this season, and that came against a Columbus team who have yet to pick up a victory. The Leafs have pretty much ben as advertised, as the belief before the season began was that it would be a long one. They have a great new coach on Mike Babcock, but without the player personnel, he cannot be expected to work miracles. Toronto has struggled at both ends of the ice, and also haven’t had any help from their special teams. They are in the lower half of the league in all the major offensive and defensive categories, and really haven’t shown any sign that they might be capable of turning things around. They have a tough stretch of games coming that could very well see them fall even further behind in the standings.
