No team that made the NHL playoffs lost more games in overtime than the Dallas Stars did, with 14, and it only took one game of their Western Conference quarterfinal series with the Minnesota Wild to drop another game in extra time, this time on their home ice. The Stars let the Wild get out to a 1-0 lead before figuring things out for some of the second period, moving ahead, 2-1. However, the Stars’ collective concentration lapsed again as the Wild tied the game and then got the game-winner from Ryan Hartman in the second overtime. Let’s break down all NHL playoff games from April 17 as you consider your NHL betting for the remainder of the first round.
NHL Betting News: Playoff Updates for April 18
Minnesota 3, Dallas 2 (2OT)
In addition to Ryan Hartman’s game-winning goal, Kirill Kaprizov and Sam Steel also lit the lamp for Minnesota. For Dallas, Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz found the back of the net in a losing effort. Dallas outshot Minnesota, 53-48, but Filip Gustavsson stopped 51 for the Wild, including 26 shots in the two overtime periods. Jake Oettinger had 45 saves for Dallas, including a dozen after regulation.
Both the third period and the first overtime were scoreless, but then Dallas got careless around the puck a bit past the midpoint of the second overtime, and Hartman pounced on the loose puck and sent a forehand by Oettinger to score his first postseason overtime goal.
Los Angeles 4, Edmonton 3 (OT)
Edmonton had a 3-1 goal in the third period and looked like they were skating to an easy win on home ice in Game 1, but the Kings roared back to tie the game in regulation, and then Alex Iafallo scored the game-winner in overtime. Anze Kopitar had a goal on a four-point night, and Adrian Kempe had two goals for the Kings, who were missing forwards Gabriel Vilardi and Kevin Fiala due to injuries. Joonas Korpisalo made that mid-season trade pay off, stopping 37 shots, and Viktor Arvidsson had a pair of assists.
Evan Bouchard had a goal for Edmonton, and Leon Draisaitl had a pair. Stuart Skinner posted 31 saves, but Connor McDavid, who led the league with 64 goals and 153 points during the regular season, did not find his way onto the scoresheet.
Boston 3, Florida 1
Brad Marchand notched the 50th playoff goal of his career at 3:41 of the second period, making him the eighth active NHL player who has scored that many in the postseason. He is only the second Bruin ever to hit 50 goals in the postseason, as Cam Neely posted 55 during his stellar career. David Pastrnak and Jake DeBrusk also tallied for the Bruins, and Linus Ullmark did brisk business in net, stopping 31 shots.
For Florida, Matthew Tkachuk had the lone goal, and Alex Lyon posted 26 saves for the Panthers. What we saw on the night was Florida attempting to keep up with Boston in a high-paced game, and mostly failing. They need to amp up the defense in Game 2 of they want to get the split on the road.
Carolina 2, N.Y. Islanders 1
The power play brought Carolina a pair of goals, from Sebastian Aho and Stefan Noesen, and Antti Raanta stopped 25 shots. His biggest saves came at the end, as he turned aside Brock Nelson’s shot with 33 seconds remaining and Bo Horvat’s shot in the last few seconds of regulation.
Ryan Pulock had the Islanders’ lone goal, as New York squandered a power play that started just after the 15:00 mark of the third period, and they also wasted a 35-save effort from goaltender Ilya Sorokin.
