Stanley Cup Odds and Analysis for Teams looking at the NHL Playoffs

Stanley Cup Odds and Analysis for Teams looking at the NHL Playoffs

The Nashville Predators face the Vegas Golden Knights in what looks like a must-win situation on Tuesday night. They are five points back of Winnipeg and eight points back of Seattle, with just a little time remaining in the regular season. ESPN has their current chances of making the playoffs at 4%. If Vancouver beats Seattle and Nashville beats Vegas, then things get slightly more hopeful. Tuesday night also offers the Colorado Avalanche a chance to clinch a postseason berth. They are in if they beat San Jose (either in regulation or overtime/shootout fashion), or if Calgary loses to Chicago, or if Nashville loses to Vegas and Chicago beats Calgary in regulation. It gets crazy this time of year, and every shift counts. Let’s look at the updated NHL betting odds for each of the teams that are still alive in the playoff hunt to win the Stanley Cup, as well as some insights about a few of the contending teams.

Carolina

needs to make sure that goaltender Frederik Andersen is ready to play at an elite level in the postseason. He’s missed a lot of time, and Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov have played well in his absence, but neither of them is a bona fide No. 1 goaltender like Andersen. He needs to get back up and running for the Hurricanes to make a deep run.

New Jersey

also has a question in goal in Vitek Vanecek. It looks like the Devils will play the New York Rangers in the first round, and the Rangers have a Vezina Trophy winner in net: Igor Shesterkin. Goals get harder to come by in the playoffs, and if the Devils find themselves in a hole after giving up some soft goals, this could be a quick series. Vanecek needs to get back to playing at an elite level.

The

New York Rangers

brought Vladimir Tarasenko to town because of his track record in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Coming to Gotham meant getting to play with former teammate Artemi Panarin, and the hope is that their synergy will help the Rangers get their first Cup since 1994. They have been hit-and-miss since Tarasenko’s arrival, so the next few games should focus on building their instincts back to where they were.

Boston

looks unbeatable these days, but the list of President’s Trophy winners that have crashed out in the first or second round of the playoffs is long. One additional insurance policy for the Bruins is winger Taylor Hall, who has been out with a lower-body injury since March 2. Having him back on one of the scoring lines would just add more scoring depth to a team that already piles up goals in bunches.

Los Angeles

has long placed its goaltending fortunes in the hands of Jonathan Quick, so when they shipped Quick out and picked up Joonas Korpisalo, the fan base took note. However, he started his Kings career with a 4-0-1 record and a .929 save percentage. Pheonix Copley is the starter for now, but Korpisalo could end up in net if Copley falters.

Dallas

puts up a lot of goals – Jason Robertson just became the first player in franchise history to score 100 points in one season. Defense is the problem, which is why Nilks Lundkvist could help so much. He has the talent to contribute at even strength and on the power play, and he needs to step up as the Stars try to take back the Central Division lead after clinching a postseason berth.
