The Dallas Stars (7-2-0) have looked very strong at the start of the season, and are shaping up to be one of the most balanced teams in the league. The Stars have played 5 of their first 9 games on the road, and have come away with a very impressive 4-1-0 record. They are also finding the net with relative ease, and their 3.4 goals per game average has them in the top 3 in scoring. They are currently in 14th in goals against average, but that is a little stilted, as they gave up 12 goals in the 2 losses they have taken this season. Take those two games out of the equation and you are looking at a team that is giving up just 1.7 goals per game. This is a team that you do not want to get undisciplined against, as they have managed at least 1 power play goal in 7 of their 9 games so far this season. The PP unit is matched by their penalty kill, which is currently operating at an 88.5% efficiency. The Stars are a well-rounded, well-balanced team that could be a legitimate Central Division contender.
The Vancouver Canucks (3-2-3) were going through a bit of a rough patch, and were very much in need of a statement game. They delivered just that on Tuesday night when they handed the Montreal Canadiens their first loss of the season in a 5-1 rout. That win helped the Canucks end a 4-game losing skid, with each of those losses of the single goal variety. Vancouver has been in every game they have played so far, but seem to be lacking in the sort of killer instinct that could have turned those losses into wins. The good news for the Canucks is that the Pacific Division is not looking particularly strong right now, which is why they are still good for second place in spite of their early season struggles. Vancouver are currently perfect on the road this season with a 3-0-0 record, but they will face their sternest test so far against Dallas.
