The New York Islanders (4-1-1) will be coming into this one on a 4-game win streak, which came after dropping their opening two games of the season. They have had the benefit of getting a lot of home games on their schedule through the opening month, and they will be looking to rack up some points before they have to start hitting the road on a more regular basis. This looks like being a distinct possibility, as the Islanders have taken 7 points from a possible 8 at home. Their two road games saw them lose 4-1 to Chicago in the second game of the year, followed by a 4-0 win over the hapless Columbus Blue Jackets in their last game. That had to be a particularly pleasing result for the Islanders, as they have not been as solid defensively as they would like. The goals are flowing for them, though, and their 3.5 goals per game average has them in the top 3 in scoring in the league.
The Boston Bruins (2-3-1) are as good as it gets on the offensive side of the ice, but they are going to continue to struggles for as long as they continue to leak goals at their current rate. The Bruins are also top 3 in goals per game average at 3.6, but their 4.2 goals allowed per game average is what is breaking their backs. A big part of their defensive woes comes from their inability to effectively kill penalties. You are going to struggle as long as your penalty killing unit is sputtering along at a 72.2% efficiency. They are great on the power play, but when you are forced into a shootout every single night, you need to be able to try and find ways to win via great goaltending and solid defense. That has not yet happened for Boston.
