The Senators ended the month of March with a 3-game losing skid that looked set to kill their playoff hopes. How they have responded since then is nothing short of amazing, as each of the 5 games that followed went beyond regulation. The Sens picked up the extra point in 4 of those outings, leaving them sitting tied with the Boston Bruins and a single point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Wild Card in the Eastern Conference. The biggest of all those recent wins came at home to Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. The Penguins had built up what looked like an unassailable 3-goal lead before the Senators did what has become habit of late, which was to storm back to score 4 unanswered goals, including the winner in OT. That win kept their playoff hopes very much alive.
The New York Rangers recently did some celebrating of their own, as they locked up the President’s Trophy for the best overall record in the NHL. The Rangers have been nothing short of great all year, so this trophy doesn’t really come as a surprise. They are top 3 in goals for and against, and top 5 in penalty killing. The only area where they have not been so great this season is on the power play, but they score so often 5 on 5 that it hasn’t really hurt them. They have a 40+ goal scorer in Rick Nash, and a goaltending duo (Lundqvist and Talbot) that is the envy of the league. In short, this is a team that is a legitimate contender to lift the Stanley Cup once the final buzzer sounds in the playoffs.
