If you watched Wednesday night’s showdown between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils, you might have thought you were watching a game from the 1970s as the opening faceoff was followed by a line brawl – all ten skaters getting into fights. Eight of the ten players were ejected for taking part in “secondary altercations,” and the most dramatic fight involved Rangers forward Matt Rempe and Devils’ forward Kurtis MacDermid, who were settling some business from March 11, when Rempe hit Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler with a high elbow, knocking him out of the game and picking up a four-game suspension. Their fight lasted the longest. The Rangers would eventually win, 4-3, on a power-play tally from Chris Kreider. Heading into the weekend, we have NHL betting previews of the Rangers’ visit to Detroit and a showdown between two potential Western Conference playoff foes – Colorado and Edmonton.
NHL Week 25 Top Betting Games for the Weekend, Analysis and Picks | NHL Week 25
New York Rangers at Detroit Red Wings
When: Friday, April 5, 2024, 7:00 pm ET, ESPN+
TV: NHL Network
NHL Odds: Rangers (-145) at Red Wings (+120) (O/U 6)
The Rangers (51-21-4) have now won eight times in their alst ten games and lead Carolina by five points atop the Metropolitan Division. Their defense ranks sixth in the league, scoring 3.42 goals per game, while their defense ranks seventh, permitting just 2.78. They rank fourth on the power play, scoring 25.8% of the time, and their penalty kill ranks third, as they have neutralized 83.7% of opponent power plays. In that win over New Jersey, the Rangers followed up the line brawl by outshooting the Devils, 15-4, in the first period, and they took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at the first intermission. On the night, the Rangers outshot the Devils, 41-20, which means that Ranger goalie Igor Shesterkin actually had an off night, allowing three goals.
The Red Wings (37-30-8) are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division – but they are tied with the Washingotn Capitals for the second wild-card playoff slot in the Eastern Conference. Their offense is also fairly prolific, ranking ninth (3.32 goals per game). The defense has been fairly porous, though, as they permit 3.31 goals per night (24th). They are tenth on the power play (22.8%) and 14th on the penalty kill (80.0%). They got a nice win over Tampa Bay in their last game, turning a 1-1 tie after two periods into a 3-2 victory. Alex Lyon stopped 34 shots in the win.
NHL Pick: Rangers to win
Colorado Avalanche at Edmonton Oilers
When: Friday, April 5, 2024, 9:00 pm ET
TV: NHL Network
NHL Odds: Avalanche (+110) at Oilers (-130) (O/U 6.5)
The Avalanche (48-22-6) are hot on the trail of the Central Division lead, just three points behind the Dallas Stars. They beat Minnesota, 5-2, on Thursday and face the Oilers on the second night of a back-to-back. Their offense leads the NHL with 3.71 goals per game; their top point scorer is Nathan MacKinnon (47 goals, 80 assists). The defense has been more than serviceable, permitting just 2.97 goals per night. Cale Makar and Devon Toews have combined to block 238 shots. Alexandar Georgiev’s numbers haven’t been elite in goal (.901 save percentage, 2.85 GAA), but the offense has continued to bail him out.
The Oilers (45-24-5) trail Vancouver and are in second place in the Pacific Division. They took a 5-0 beating in Dallas in their last game, but their offense has been high-powered this season, putting up 3.54 goals per game and scoring 30 goals in their last nine games – including that shutout. Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have combined to score 68 goals and notch 157 assists. The defense permits just 2.88 goals per game, and Stuart Skinner has put up decent numbers in goal (.906 save percentage, 2.63 GAA). Can the Oil take advantage of a road-weary Avalanche team?

2024 NHL Week 14 Top Betting Games
As the calendar flips to 2024, the NHL trade deadline is now less than two months away, and the Philadelphia Flyers and the Anaheim Ducks have made the first big blockbuster deal of the year. There are some other rumors going around, such as popular player Jake Guentzel being on the block in Pittsburgh. The Penguins are a team on the playoff bubble, but ownership wants to push for Stanley Cups as long as Sidney Crosby can still produce at an elite level. The team doesn’t really have much in the way of prospects or draft picks to swap, but they do have Guentzel. At 29,he is in the last year of a five-year, $30 million contract and will need more money in a free-agent deal. Guentzel has an impressive resume – in 58 postseason games, he has scored 34 goals, and his name is already on the Cup once. So we’ll see which way the Penguins go. As the weekend approaches, don’t miss these primo sports betting picks in the NHL Week 14.
NHL Week 14 Top Betting Games for the Weekend, Analysis and Picks
Nashville Predators at Dallas Stars
When: Friday, January 12, 2024, 8:00 pm ET
TV: NHL Network
The Predators (22-18-1) come to Dallas (24-11-5) to take on the Stars for the third time this season. The teams have split the first two meetings, and the Predators would like to wipe the taste of that 5-3 loss to Anaheim out of their mouths. The Preds were -230 favorites, but Juuse Saros permitted five goals on 33 shots, so the goals by Philip Tomasino, Alexandre Carrier and Denis Gurianov went for naught. The Nashville offense has been cooking lately, with at least three goals scored in seven of their last nine. That has brought them up to 18th in the league in goals per game. The defense also ranks 18th in both goals and shots on goal permitted per game. Both goalies (Saros and Kevin Lankinen) have GAA’s above 3 and save percentages right by the .900 line, so there is room for improvement.
The Stars entered their last game against Minnesota as -200 favorites and routed the Wild, 7-2. Scott Wedgewood, who continues to excel in goal while Jake Oettinger recovers from an upper-body injury, stopped 21 of 23 shots, and Esa Lindell was the points leader with three assists. The Stars have at least four goals in six of their last 10 games and are second in the NHL in goals per game. Jason Robertson is the team leader with 41 points, but there is plenty of depth as Joe Pavelski, Roope Hintz and Matt Duchene have 36 points apiece. The defense is 14th in goals allowed per game. Stars to win.
New York Rangers at Washington Capitals
When: Saturday, January 13, 2024, 1:00 pm ET
TV: ABC
The Rangers (26-11-2) lead the Metropolitan Division but have lost two in a row and three of their last four, losing in Montreal and then at home to the Vancouver Canucks, surrendering 10 goals in those setbacks. They play in St. Louis on Thursday before heading to Washington for an early game on Saturday. In the loss to Vancouver, Vincent Trocheck had a pair of goals and Artemi Panarin also scored in the 6-3 defeat. Panarin has points in 33 of the Rangers’ 39 games and leads the Blueshirts with 57 points. This was only the second time this season that the Rangers have consecutive losses and the first time since December 5 and 9. Igor Shesterkin posted 20 saves on the night but permitted three goals on the first seven shots he saw.
Washington (19-13-6) sits in fifth in the Metropolitan, 10 points back of the Rangers. They had dropped six of seven before beating the L.A. Kings at home, 4-3, on Sunday. They face the Seattle Kraken on Thursday before welcoming the Rangers on Saturday. John Carlson was the hero in the Sunday victory, netting the game-winner with just 53 seconds left in regulation. It was the fourth line that carried the day, as Nicolas Aube-Kubel had a goal and two assists, Nic Dowd had a goal and an assist, and Beck Malenstyn chipped in an assist. Putting Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome and Max Pacioretty on the same line mid-game helped boost the offense as well. Darcy Kuemper saw 41 shots and stopped 38. Can the Caps make it three losses in a row for New York? Rangers to win.
