Olympic Boxing Betting Preview: Paris 2024 Analysis & Picks

At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Olympic Betting Boxing will run from July 27 until August 10.

The preliminary matches are set for Arena Paris Nord in Villepinte, while Roland Garros Stadium, which also hosts tennis’ Grand Slam event, the French Open, will host the medal rounds (semifinals and finals). There are 13 weight classes (seven for men and six for women).

Qualification is different for these Olympics, as the International Olympic Committee replaced the International Boxing Association with a new system that used continental events to assign quota spots in the tournament.

A total of 248 spots, half for men and half for women, were assigned for the tournament. Let’s break down some of the weight classes as you consider your sports betting for the Summer Games.

Men’s 51kg

Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan won the gold in 2016 and won the Asian Games this year.

His professional record is 7-0. He’s the smart pick on most sportsbooks to win gold this year. Billal Bennama of France gets the edge while boxing for the host nation.

He fought in the 2020 Summer Games and breezed through the European Games this year. If you want a sleeper, look at Patrick Chinyemba from Zambia.

The talent pool in Africa isn’t generally as solid, which means his win at the African Games is less impressive than some of the other continental tournaments.

He fought in 2020 but lost on the cards by Galal Yafai, who would go on to win gold.

Men’s 57kg

Jahmal Harvey from Team USA won all three of his Pan-Am Games matches via unanimous decision, including wins over two other Olympic qualifiers.

This is also one of the weaker weight classes, which will help him.

Javier Ibanez of Bulgaria won the European Games and had to win five fights to do it because of his placement in the draw.

Three of those wins came against other Olympic qualifiers. A sleeper here might be Ukraine’s Aider Abduraimov. He skipped the European Games and the first open qualifier, so he had to make it through the only qualifier he entered.

He drew two-time Olympican Yoel Finol in the first round, but then came back to beat him and won out from there.

Men’s 63.5kg

Erislandy Alvarez of Cuba is a smart pick now that Chinzorig Battarsukh of Mongolia got kicked off the list after testing positive for PEDs.

This is a strong weight class, but Alvarez fought well in the open qualifiers.

Frenchman Soufiane Oumiha gets to fight for the host nation and has plenty of Olympic experience, including a silver medal from the 2016 Games.

Chu-en Lai of Taiwan is an interesting sleeper; he fought in the 0216 Games, and his only loss at the Asian Games came in the final against Battarsukh.

Men’s 71kg

Sewon Okazawa is Japan’s best fighter – and the country’s best hope for a gold medal in these Games. He fought in the 2020 Games before losing to Cuban Roniel Iglesias, one of the best Olympic boxers ever.

He won the Asian Games – and all four of the fighters he beat are also in these Olympics.

Marco Verde of Mexico won all four fights in the Pan Am Games unanimously, and he just beat Roniel Iglesias in a professional fight.

Nishant Dev of India is a possible sleeper as the Indian amateur boxing scene is solid. He fought three Paris qualifiers in his tournaments and beat Eskerkhan Madiev from Georgia, perhaps the best boxer from that part of the world that didn’t qualify for the Games.

Men’s 80kg

Arlen Lopez of Cuba is a virtual lock to win this weight class. He won gold at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games and won the Pan Am Games this year.

Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine fought in the 2020 Games and won the European Games, beating two other Olympic qualifiers.

A sleeper here would be Eumir Marcial of the Philippines. He fought in the 2020 Games and also fought Khyzhniak tough, losing 3-2 on the cards.

He had two knockout wins in the Asian Games, including one over Weerapon Jongjoho of Thailand, who qualified for these Games.

Men’s 92kg

Cuba’s Julio Cesar la Cruz has a 271-24 amateur record and won gold in 2016 and 2020.

He won the Pan Am games this year and has only lost four amateur fights since 2019.

This is likely to be his last run at the Games, but he’s still the smart pick. Loren Alfonso of Azerbaijan is another Cuban fighter who defected. He won bronze in 80kg in the 2020 games.

Men’s 92kg+

Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalalov is the top amateur in the world, pound for pound. He has a 14-0 pro record.

He won gold at the 2020 Games and won the Asian Games this year, knocking out two of these three opponents, including one in only 39 seconds.

Kamshybek Kunkabayev of Kazakhstan lost to Jalalov in the Asian Games via split decision, which means he got a judge to vote for him. He did win bronze in 2020.
