Why should you put your money on Bayern?
Bayern picked up a nice home win over fifth-place Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, prevailing 2-1. Joshua Zirkzee put Bayern on the board in the 26th minute, but then Monchengladbach forced an own goal to bring things level. It looked like Monchengladbach might leave Munich with that point until the 86th minute, when Leon Goretzka delivered the game-winning strike.
The shots were somewhat limited on the day, with Bayern edging Monchengladbach 8-6 (4-2 on target). Possession was split evenly, and the play was somewhat physical as the teams combined to commit 23 fouls, with Monchengladbach drawing a pair of yellow cards. Both teams played careful soccer; given how quickly Bayern is pulling away with the Bundesliga, it’s not hard to see them coming out with less than the usual amount of energy facing a team way down the table.
Why should you bet on Werder?
Werder has plenty of motivation coming in, given the danger of relegation that awaits them. They sit three points behind Mainz, and a win would move them up toward them. Werder visited last-place Paderborn on Saturday and showed all sorts of energy, rolling to a 5-1 rout. Davy Klaassen opened the scoring for the visitors, and then Yuya Osako made it 2-0 in the 34th minute. Five minutes later, Klaassen completed his brace, sending the match into halftime 3-0. Maximilian Eggestein tallied in the 59th minute, but then Abdelhamid Sabiri scored for the hosts in the 66th minute to spoil the clean sheet. Niclas Fullkrug added some icing on the cake in injury time to yield the final score.
Paderborn actually outshot Werder, 10-6, but Werder led in shots on target, 5-4. The visitors also led in possession, 55-45 percent. The match was an extremely physical one, as the teams combined for 35 fouls and nine yellow cards (with six going to Paderborn). Given how Werder got all over Paderborn, I’m expecting them to bring maximum effort against Bayern Munich as well. It would not take much for Werder to swipe an early goal and then go back into a shell to hold on for dear life. Would Bayern have the energy to grab the equalizer, let alone the game-winner? Normally, I would pick Bayern to win every time. Here, though, I’m going to look at that big Werder win and grab that extra value that comes with wagering on the draw. I predict a final score of Werder 1, Bayern 1.
