Let’s be honest. Cameroon should have given up at least five goals against Chile, in the first half. But Chile had way too many easy chances that led to missed shots or sloppy passing. However, the midfield does not mark well, and they do not possess well, which means that the back line is under almost constant attack once the attackers lose possession. But even so, Chile did a solid job managing the Cameroon attack when the Lions sent through balls in deep. Australia does not have the same sort of defensive discipline that Chile has, which means that Cameroon could start the scoring early and get off to a hot start. That 3-2 score between Australia and Germany was a bit of a misnomer, as German goalkeeper Bernd Leno made huge mistakes that led to both goals for the men from down under. The problem for Australia in that Group B opener was possession, as Die Mannschaft simply held onto the ball, keeping Australia from being able to mount consistent attacks. I see Australia mounting attack after attack, and I see this game truly turning into a track meet as both sides send caution to the wind and pursue offense at all costs. For example, take a look at midfielder Ajdin Hrustic in the Aussie midfield. He will earn his third cap with the Socceroos, having joined Australia over Bosnia (the country of his father’s birth) and played in a 4-0 friendly loss against Brazil. If he can lock down that middle for Australia, he could be a dominant player for the Asian champion for years to come — and he could make a big splash against Cameroon.
