Champions League Matchday 6 Top Bets, Expert Analysis & Picks – UCL Standings implications

Ready for the Champions League Matchday 6 Top Bets? Moving to a league-phase format has produced some intriguing results in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League standings.

Five rounds of matches have already taken place, leaving three to go. One of the top matchups in Matchday 6 features Borussia Dortmund against Barcelona.

Both teams have been scoring goals in bunches – particularly in Champions League play. That hasn’t translated into Bundesliga success for Dortmund, but they are fourth in the UCL league phase table with four victories and a loss, scoring 3.2 goals per game.

Barcelona brings a new group of talent into the match, combined with the high defensive line strategies of Hansi Flick and captain Raphinha Dias, who leads the Champions League in goals to this point.

Let’s look at the schedule for Matchday 6 with the sports betting odds for each game as well as our thoughts on some of the top picks.

Inter Milan vs Bayer Leverkusen

Champions Pick: Leverkusen to win.

Both teams delivering an intriguing matchup that has the German side slightly favored to beat the Serie A titan – despite the fact that Inter have yet to lose in UCL league phase play. However, Leverkusen have Czech striker Patrik Schick has taken advantage of the absence of Victor Boniface, scoring five goals in three matches including a hat trick in the team’s win over Heidenheim. He also found the back of the net in his last match in a home win over RB Salzburg. In DFB Cup play, he has two goals in two matches and now has nine goals across all competitions.

He’s questionable to play thanks to a calf injury, but if he can return, he is likely to do damage against Inter. There’s also Florian Wirtz, who has been named Player of the Match in four of the five opening matches of UCL league phase play – his first action in any Champions League. In Bundesliga play, Leverkusen have only lost once, back on Matchday 2 against RB Leipzig. Since then, they have a 10-match unbeaten streak (five wins and five draws), scoring 23 goals and climbing to third place in the Bundesliga table. They have 28 goals overall, ranking third, and they also lead the Bundesliga in shots off the woodwork, with nine. They also rank first in crosses from duels won (1,183) and crosses from open play (148). That’s how they’ve only registered one loss in their last 46 Bundesliga matches.

Atalanta vs Real Madrid

Champions Pick: Real Madrid to win.

This game offers a matchup between two titans of the sport – and both of these sides need the three points that would come with a win. Atalanta beat AC Milan, 2-1, at home on Friday, to move to the top of the Serie A table and pushing their winning streak across all competitions to nine. They have three wins and two draws in league phase play, but they’re only one point clear of ninth-place Aston Villa. Real Madrid, in contrast, sit in 24th place among the 36 teams in the table. They are four points back of eighth place Monaco, so they need every point they can get.

They went to Girona on Saturday and delivered a 3-0 beating, getting within two points of Barcelona in the La Liga Table. Kylian Mbappe found his way back onto the scoresheet after missing penalties in consecutive matches against Athletic Bilbao and Liverpool. Real Madrid beat Atalanta back in the UEFA Super Cup in August, 2-0, so Atalanta would love nothing more than to make it much tougher for Real Madrid to climb back up to automatic qualification. However, Atalanta have struggled at home in the UCL league phase, failing to score a goal in either match. Can they overcome these struggles and play with the same quality they have brought to Serie A action this season? There’s frankly not a lot of value in taking that risk, so I’m taking “Los Blancos” to win.

Juventus vs Manchester City

Champions Pick: Juventus to win.

They are representing the seventh all-time matchup between these two European giants. City won the first meeting, way back in 1976, but Juventus have remained undefeated ever since, with three wins and two draws. City’s winless streak against the Serie A power is the longest one they have against any opponent in a European competition, matching the five-match skid they had going against Barcelona from 2014 to 2016. City have permitted seven goals in their last two UCL matches (four to Sporting CP and three to Feyenoord) after starting the league phase with three clean sheets.

In his coaching career, Pep Guardiola has never had a team permit more than two goals in three straight matches in Champions League play. The two sides have an identical eight points, but City have a +6 goal differential while Juventus have just a +2 edge. City have gotten things going once again in Premier League play, whipping Nottingham Forest, 3-0, before drawing at Crystal Palace, 2-2. Juventus’ form has been better in recent days in Serie A, and they have the edge of playing at home.

RB Leipzig vs Aston Villa

Champions Pick: Take the draw.

A particular showdown between two teams heading in opposite directions in UCL play despite the relatively even odds on the matchup. Leipzig have lost all five of their league phase matches, while Aston Villa have picked up 10 points so far and could climb into the top eight and qualify automatically for the knockout round. Villa have fallen off the table in English Premier League play, and that slump has followed them into Champions League action, as they lost at Club Brugge and then could not do better than a scoreless home draw against Juventus. Even so, Villa have posted four clean sheets in five UCL matches, and the only loss came thanks to a weird Club Brugge penalty. In EPL play, Villa have recently gotten back to some winning ways with home wins over Brentford and Southampton.

Against Southampton

Against “The Saints”, they narrowly escaped with a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal by Jhon Duran, who also leads his team with two goals and nine attempted shots in UCL play, despite the fact that he’s only been in action for a little over a third for the side’s playing time. All they really need is a draw here to get qualification. Leipzig must win to have a chance even to climb into the top 24, getting into the knockout playoff round. Four of those losses were just by one goal, and all came against tough teams (Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool, and Inter Milan), but that 3-1 loss at Celtic was a real disappointment. If they lose a sixth match in a row, that would be the longest Champions League skid by any German side since Bayer Leverkusen dropped seven in a row in 2003. Benjamin Sesko has three of the side’s four UCL goals, and he scored this weekend against Holstein Kiel in a 2-0 Bundesliga win this past weekend – staying in the top four, far above where they sit in UCL play.
