Copa America Soccer Betting Preview: Peru vs. Brazil

It’s not often that Brazil comes into a tournament with something to prove, but that is exactly the position they are in at the Copa America. They are still trying to live down the 7-1 beating they took at the hands of Germany in the World Cup semi-final last summer, and you get the sense that nothing short of winning this tournament will make that go away. They will start the tournament on Sunday night when they face Peru in a Group C soccer betting match-up.

Brazilian coach Dunga has an embarrassment of riches to choose from in his squad, and while that may seem like a blessing, it can be a curse trying to find the perfect balance and keep everyone happy. The strength of Brazil lies in the middle of the park, where they are totally loaded, but let’s also not forget that they have Neymar just waiting to get on the end of everything that midfield creates. Brazil have done a great job of bouncing back after their horrific World Cup exit, and are a perfect 9-0 since Dunga took over for the second time. During that winning stretch they have scored 20 goals and only given up 2, which means they are coming into this tournament in a rich vein of for. If Brazil can play to expectations, Argentina are really the only team that should cause them any pain.
Peru haven’t really made a major mark on the world stage since 1982, which was the last time they qualified for a World Cup. That said, they did perform well in the last Copa America, ending up with a 3rd place finish in what was admittedly a tournament that was lacking in any real serious competition. The Peru squad is made up of a large collection of veterans, and they will be hoping that experience can carry them out of Group C. They will be looking to Paolo Guerrero to provide the same scoring punch as he did in the last Copa America, where he was the top scorer. Peru appear to be in pretty tough here, as they share a group with Brazil and a very talented Colombian team.

Games between Brazil and Peru tend to be low-scoring affairs, and while I don’t really expect this one to break the trend, I still think Brazil will come away with a comfortable 2-0 win.
