Your Guide to Betting on the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16

The Copa Sudamericana is the secondary club soccer tournament that the South American soccer federation (CONMEBOL) puts on each year.

It started on March 5 and will end with the final on November 23, in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The tournament winners will take on the winners of the 2024 Copa Libertadores, the top club soccer tournament in the region, in the 2025 Recopa Sudamericana.

Last year’s Sudamericana winners were LDU Quito. Let’s look at the schedule for the round of 16 for this year’s tournament and go over some sports betting thoughts on the matches ahead of the first leg, set for August 13 or shortly thereafter.

Soccer Betting Lines: 2024 Copa Sudamericana, Round of 16 Preview | Soccer Odds

Rosario Central +134 vs Fortaleza +196

Fortaleza advanced to the round of 16 thanks to a draw with Internacional after a 1-0 win in the first leg.

The Lions made it to the Sudamericana final a year ago. Fortaleza is the favorites here, but they are likely to have to do more than muster one goal per match if they want to advance.

Rosario Central play with a physical style that is strong in marking and depends on set pieces and counter-attacks.

Their 4-4-2 formation can be difficult to penetrate, and it becomes even more so under pressure, contracting to a 5-3-2. Fortaleza to win.

RB Bragantino +120 vs Corinthians +212

Bragantino held on for a 3-2 win to eliminate Barcelona SC from the round of 32.

They had played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg that was disappointing because it involved surrendering a 1-0 lead, but they are through and now will take on Corinthians.

Corinthians got a bye to the round of 16; their last action came on Thursday in Serie A play.

They drew Gremio at home, 2-2. Gremio took an early lead as Rodrigo Ely tallied in the second minute. Yuri Alberto brought the hosts level from the spot in the 25th minute.

Mathias Villasanti gave the visitors hope in the 76th minute, but Rodrigo Garro ensured a point for the hosts with a goal in the 87th minute.

This was a disappointing result given that Gremio are currently in the relegation zone for Serie A – a fate that could also grab Corinthians, as they have just 19 points in 19 matches and are just four points clear of relegation. RB Bragantino to win.

Belgrano +610 vs Athletico Paranaense -242

Athletico Paranaense got the road draw with Cerro Porteno, 1-1, on July 19, and then got the home win, 2-1, to move on to the round of 16. In between, they were dealt a 1-0 away loss to RB Bragantino on July 21 in Serie A play.

Belgrano also got a bye to the round of 16. In Argentina’s Primera Division, they have gone 1-1-1 in their last three matches, they have a 1-1-1 record, drawing Club Atletico Tigre on the road, beating Deportivo Riestra at home, 2-1, and losing in Lanus, 3-2 on Thursday. Belgrano to win.

Huachipato +222 vs Racing Club Avellaneda +118

Huachipato needed penalties to eliminate Racing Club Montevideo in the round of 32. They beat lost on the road, 3-2, but won the reverse fixture, 1-0, before advancing, 3-0, on penalties.

Racing Club Avellaneda had a bye to the round of 16 and have split their last two contests in Argentina’s Primera Division.

They beat Godoy Cruz at home, 3-0, but fell at Sarmiento, 1-0. Those away difficulties could rear their head again here. Huachipato to win.

Libertad -310 vs Sportivo Ameliano +780

Sportivo Ameliano had a bye into the round of 16, but they are winless (four losses and a draw) in their last five matches.

Their last domestic win came on April 29 at Olimpia, and their last win overall came in Sudamericana group play on May 30, when they beat Athletico-PR, 1-0.

Libertad have four wins in their last five matches across all competitions. They used a 2-0 home win over Universidad Catolica and a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture to advance.

In their domestic division, they last played on July 20 and doubled up Tacuary on the road, 4-2. Libertad to win.

Boca Juniors -105 vs Cruzeiro +275

Boca Juniors only scored one goal in their round of 32 tie against Independiente, but it was enough to get through.

The scoreless away draw and the 1-0 home win got through with just the minimum on offense.

Cruzeiro had a bye to the round of 16 and have won four of their last six, including 2-0 over Juventude in their most recent domestic match.

A loss at Palmeiras preceded that win, but before that they had three wins in a row 3-0 over Corinthians, 2-0 over Gremio and 2-1 over Bragantino. Cruzeiro to win.

Palestino +151 vs Independiente Medellin +164

Palestino allowed Cuiaba a 1-1 draw in the home fixture but then went on the road and prevailed, 2-1, to move onto the round of 16. They have three wins, two draws and a loss in their last six matches across all competitions.

Independiente Medellin have won four and drawn once in their last five.

They had a bye into the round of 16 and come in with a prolific offense. In domestic league play they torched the apparently misnamed Always Ready, 4-0.

Independiente drew a more appropriately named Defensa, 1-1, two matches ago, but then they went to Cesar Vallejo the previous match and delivered a 5-1 beating.

Independiente to win.

LDU Quito -185 vs Lanus +460

LDU Quito, the defending Sudamericana champions, took Always Ready to the woodshed in their home tie, winning 3-0.

However, Always Ready almost came all the way back in the reverse fixture, taking a 3-1 win. In LigaPro, Quito got torched by Barcelona SC, 2-0.

They held on for a 2-1 home win over Universidad Catolica but then settled for a 2-2 draw with Deportivo Cuenca.

Atletico Lanus had the bye into the round of 16 and are unbeaten in their last four Argentine Primera Division matches (two wins, two draws).

Lanus should expect to take advantage of some defensive lapses on Quito’s part. Lanus to win.
