Now that we’re more than a month into the 2024-25 English Premier League season, some players are already showing that they can pull away with some of the individual accolades.
Erling Haaland was the top scorer by far last season, even though he missed time in the middle of the calendar with an injury.
Cole Palmer came out of nowhere to finish second thanks to a four-goal performance against Everton late in the campaign.
Haaland has the early lead so far, including his 91st goal in just 100 appearances for Man City.
He followed that up with hat tricks in wins over Ipswich Town and West Ham. He reached his 100th goal in all competitions with a tally against Arsenal.
Liverpool’s Luis Diaz has five goals after his brace against Bournemouth, but the gap is already sizable.
Let’s look at some top matches from the English first division as you plan your sports betting for the weekend.

Chelsea FC -146 vs Brighton & Hove Albion +330
When: Saturday, September 28, 10:00 am ET
Premier League Odds for Draw +310
Chelsea has won four in a row against Brighton. However, Brighton are an improved side this year, with 12 goals in their last five matches. Chelsea has some solid attacking of its own, but they will have their hands full of a Brighton team that has a six-match unbeaten streak in away fixtures. Cole Palmer is a key attacker for Chelsea and ranks third in the EPL for big chances created, with four. Their 3-0 win over West Ham pushed them up to second in the table. They will miss Reece James, Omari Kellyman and Malo Gusto this week due to injury.
Brighton needs to figure out how to solidify their defense if they want to stay in the top third of the table, let alone compete for a spot in the Champions League. Their attacking was solid when they eliminated two different one-goal deficits against Nottingham Forest, but the fact that they gave up those two goals ruined what could have been a three-point day. No team has conceded more penalties than Brighton have so far this season.
EPL Pick: Take the draw.
^Ipswich Town +330 vs Aston Villa -142
When: Sunday, September 29, 9:00 am ET
Premier League Odds for Draw +285
Ipswich Town comes in on a six-game winless streak and have only scored five goals over their last five matches. Their attacking has been inconsistent, although they may have broken through in their 1-1 draw against Southampton. Captain Sam Morsy delivered the equalizer at the last minute – but can they keep that momentum going against Aston Villa, who currently sit third in the EPL table? The Ipswich defense has also been inconsistent, conceding too many penalties.
Aston Villa have 13 goals in their last five matches and are unbeaten in four straight away matches. They rolled over Wolves, 3-1, turning an early 1-0 deficit into a laugher with goals from three different scorers. They dominated possession in the second half and showed tactical discipline on both ends of the field. Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn will miss the game due to injury, leaving potential gaps in the midfield. Even so, Aston Villa should be able to press forward.
EPL Pick: Aston Villa to win.
^Manchester United +124 vs Tottenham Hotspur +175
When: Sunday, September 29, 11:30 am ET
Premier League Odds for Draw +270
Both of these big-name EPL teams are scuffling a bit coming out of the gate. This continues a trend from last season, when they ended up “just” in the Europa League instead of their usual Champions League status. Tottenham did thump Brentford, 3-1, last week, while the Red Devils are still in the weeds, having been held to a scoreless draw by Crystal Palace last week. Spurs are looking to make it two wins in two weeks at Old Trafford. Tottenham have just seven points out of five games; they had lost two in a row before beating Brentford. Their first match was a 1-1 draw against Leicester City, freshly back up from the second division. Then they lost, 4-0, to Everton – and the Toffees are in the relegation zone already, so that was a poor result by any measure.
Erik ten Hag would like to see a better campaign this time around for the Red Devils. They started the season with a win over Fulham before losing to Liverpool and Brighton. They currently sit in 11th place, just behind Spurs, but much like the Lily whites, the Red Devils must figure out how to get the talent on their roster all working together.
EPL Pick: Spurs to win.
