Real Madrid is breathing down Barcelona’s neck at the top of the La Liga table, as their Thursday win puts them just two points off the pace to lead the league. On Sunday, they head to Basque country to face Real Sociedad, who is currently tied with Getafe for fifth place — but just four points behind Sevilla for third. Real Sociedad has their eyes on one of the four automatic UEFA Champions League slots that are awarded to the top four finishers in the league, so they have plenty of motivation with Real Madrid coming to town. Why should you put your money on Real Sociedad?
Real Sociedad would love to forget Thursday’s match. They went to Alaves and not only took a 2-0 beating but lost Joseba Zaldua in the 81st minute to a red card, so he will have to miss Sunday’s match. Alaves is in 12th place in La Liga, so this was a match Real Sociedad needed to win in order to keep pace. Alaves opened the scoring in the 56th minute when Borja Sainz tallied. Martin Aguirregabiria added some icing to the cake in injury time at the end of the second half. Alaves also lost a player via a red card in a match that got, shall we say, spirited.
Real Sociedad possessed for two-thirds of the match but only mustered eight shots none on target. Alaves launched 15 shots, with seven on target. Alaves also played the more physical game, committing 21 fouls to just 11 for Real Sociedad. The teams combined for five yellow cards and those two red cards. However, the lack of precision in the Real Sociedad attack left the door open way too many times for Alaves. If they do the same thing against Real Madrid, the match will be even uglier.
Why should you bet on Real Madrid?
Real Madrid welcomed Valencia to town on Thursday and rolled to a 3-0 rout. The game was close for about two-thirds of the way, as the teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie. It took Karim Benzema until the 61st minute to score. Marco Asensio added a goal in the 74th minute, and then Benzema finished his brace in the 86th minute. The frustration got to be too much for Valencia, as Lee Kang-in was shown a red card in the 89th minute. Given the way Real Madrid dismantled Valencia, Real Sociedad should not count on the visitors coming in distracted.
Real Madrid possessed for 63 percent of the match and outshot Valencia, 19-5 (14-2 on target). The fouls were even, 12-11 for Real Madrid, but Valencia lost composure, taking two yellow cards and that red card just before the match came to an end. Real Madrid applied plenty of pressure, forcing eight corners, and basically had their way from start to finish. If you like Real Madrid here, you see their complete game returning again just a few days later.
Final Score Prediction
I’m not sure that Real Sociedad was ready for the resumption of play after the COVID-19 hiatus. I don’t see them doing much damage to Real Madrid, given how well they played on Thursday. I see Real Madrid taking Real Sociedad to the woodshed and winning, 3-0.
