Barcelona picked up a much-needed win over Athletic Bilbao to move three points clear of Real Madrid on top of the La Liga table. However, Real Madrid still has a match in hand and takes on Mallorca, firmly ensconced in the relegation zone, in their next match — so Barcelona needs to keep winning in order to hold pace in the La Liga race. The next challenge for Barcelona is Celta Vigo, currently seven points clear of relegation in 16th place. Celta Vigo went to Real Sociedad and came away winners on Wednesday. Why should you put your money on Barcelona?
Barcelona continued their run of anemic offense in their 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday. The match rolled along in scoreless fashion all the way to the 71st minute, when Ivan Rakitic found the back of the Athletic net for the hosts.
Barcelona had plenty of time with the ball, possessing for 72 percent of the match, and they hoisted 12 shots to just three for the visitors. However, they only put two of those shots on frame, as they settled too often to fire from distance. The teams combined for 25 fouls, with three yellow cards (two to Barcelona). The hosts applied enough pressure to elicit six corners, but it will be difficult for them to keep winning with such a narrow margin for error. If you like Barcelona, then you think that their offense will perk up a bit.
Why should you bet on Celta Vigo?
Celta Vigo took advantage of a Real Sociedad team that was still reeling from its loss to Real Madrid two matches ago. Celta Vigo went to Basque country and snuck away with three points, thanks to a 1-0 win. Iago Aspas converted from the penalty spot in injury time at the end of the first half to provide the only scoring of the match.
Real Sociedad possessed for 58 percent of the match and outshot Celta Vigo 13-4 (6-2 on target). The match was markedly physical, with 32 combined fouls and six yellow cards (four going to Real Sociedad). The hosts did apply a good bit of pressure, forcing seven corner kicks, but the set pieces did not pay off. Celta Vigo was able to benefit from the referee’s whistle in the penalty area and made that easy goal stand up. If you like Celta Vigo against Barcelona, then you see living dangerously paying off, but it is rare to see that happen for multiple matches in a row.
Celta vs Barcelona Final Score Prediction
Barcelona does manage to keep winning just enough to hold onto at least a share of the La Liga lead. However, scoring just one goal a game will eventually come back to bite them again. Celta Vigo got away with some larceny with their win at Real Sociedad, and it’s hard to see that sort of sleight of hand happening against the league leaders. Eventually, one of two things has to happen — either Barcelona breaks through and starts scoring more goals, or their defense suffers a breakdown and they start hemorrhaging points in the standings. Based on their revival right before the COVID-19 shutdown, I think they can get the scoring up and running again. I predict a final of Barcelona 2, Celta Vigo 0.
