The last two matchdays of group play in the UEFA Nations League are underway, with Matchday 5 set for Thursday-Saturday and Matchday 6 set for Sunday-Tuesday of next week.
Each matchday involves play from all four of the leagues within the competition; participation in each league is based on performance in prior years.
The 52 European nations that have participating soccer teams are looking to advance to a knockout round playoff draw on November 22, with playoffs to take place in March.
Let’s look at the current standings, the Matchday 5 schedule with sports betting odds and some thoughts about top picks for this weekend and teams that we can expect to advance.
UEFA Nations League Matchday 5 Games Picks & Betting Lines | Soccer Odds
Belgium +140 vs Italy +185
When: Thursday, November 14, 2:45 PM
UNL lines for Draw +230
The last shot for Belgium at a quarterfinal berth – and the Red Devils haven’t beaten the Azzurri in a competitive match in 52 years. The last time they played, in Rome, Belgium got awfully close but fell short in a 2-2 draw that saw them claw all the way back from a 2-0 deficit. After that, Belgium fell to France, 2-1, while Italy rolled over Israel, 4-1 in Daniel Maldini’s debut – the youngster joins his father and grandfather on the storied roster of the Italian national team. Can Belgium break through at home against Italy? They’ll have more on the line as Italy lead Group A2 without a defeat on their record.
Nations League Pick: Take the draw.
^Portugal -410 vs Poland +910
When: Friday, November 15, 2:45 PM
UNL lines for Draw +460
Now is Portugal’s shot at nailing down a quarterfinal berth. All they need is a single point – and they’ve already left clinching on the table after a goalless draw against Scotland in their last match. Poland have not beaten Portugal in 16 years, even though three of their previous six matchups have ended in draws. Poland fell to Portugal in the reverse fixture, 3-1, and coach Michal Probierz criticized his side for conceding too much offense. The defense didn’t listen that much before their next match against Croatia, but the offense was able to claw its way from a 3-1 deficit to a 3-3 draw. Can Poland use momentum from that result to get a better outcome at the Estadio do Dragao?
Nations League Pick: Portugal to win.
^Netherlands -275 vs Hungary +630
When: Saturday, November 16, 2:45 PM
UNL lines for Draw +370
Is Hungary’s chance to snag a quarterfinal berth. They beat Bosnia & Herzegovina, 2-0, on Matchday 4, bringing them level with Netherlands on points. The Hungarian side believe they can attack as well as the Dutch, but if that attacking doesn’t accompany solid midfield and back-line play, things could be ugly – as they were when Germany dealt Hungary a 5-0 lesson on Matchday 1. Matchday 3 saw Hungary finish with a 1-1 draw against Netherlands – a match that would have been a Hungary win had Denzel Dumfries not delivered a late equalizer. Before that draw, they had lost nine straight against the Oranje, permitting 38 goals in those matches.
Nations League Pick: Netherlands to win.
^Greece +310 vs England -110
When: Thursday, November 14, 2:45 PM
UNL lines for Draw +240
The game is just the latest shot by the Three Lions for something resembling redemption after losing to Greece, 2-1, at Wembley Stadium on Matchday 3. The Three Lions have four wins in four trips to Greece, but the hosts have the only perfect record in League B.
Nations League Pick: Take the draw.
^Denmark +360 vs Spain -129
When: Friday, November 15, 2:45 PM
UNL lines for Draw +232
They could mark the Danes’ first win over Spain in 31 years. In Matchday 3, Spain got a narrow 1-0 win that could just have easily featured a draw. With solid play that goes a full 90 minutes, the Danes could end that long losing streak.
Nations League Pick: Spain to win.
^Sweden -155 vs Slovakia +390
When: Saturday, November 16, 2:45 PM
UNL lines for Draw +285
This is an intriguing matchup as Slovakia erased a 2-0 deficit at home on Matchday 3 and took the 2-2 draw. These are the Group C1 leaders, tied with ten points apiece. The Slovakian side now knows what to expect out of the Swedes – will that knowledge lead to victory?
Nations League Pick: Sweden to win.
