Written by on September 6, 2019

Four remain in the 2019 US Open Men’s Semifinals. Two of the semifinalists come from the top five seeds in the tournament; one was seeded 24th, and one was an unseeded qualifier who has made it all the way through the first five rounds. Grigor Dimitrov powered through Roger Federer in their quarterfinal match on Tuesday, advancing in a grueling, five-set match that saw Dimitrov win the last two, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Daniil Medvedev knocked off Stan Wawrinka a round after Wawrinka had advanced past top seed Novak Djokovic, with Medvedev winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. On Wednesday, Rafael Nadal dispatched Diego Schwartzman in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Matteo Berrettini upset Gael Monfils in the fourth quarterfinal match, needing five sets to advance, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5). With just four players remaining, take a look at our sports betting thoughts about each semifinal match before you place your own wagers.

#5 Daniil Medvedev vs Grigor Dimitrov (4:00pm ET)

Medvedev won 67 percent of his service points and broke Wawrinka four times in their quarterfinal match. Medvedev showed a lot of power with his serve, delivering 11 aces. His weak link, though, is his tendency to double fault and make unforced errors. When he is on with that first serve, though, the idea of breaking him becomes difficult indeed. He has won each of his last four matches in four sets and now is on the brink of his first ever Grand Slam final appearance. He is on a roll on hardcourt, winning 11 matches in a row. Dimitrov pulled off what has to be the upset of the tournament so far, taking down the great Federer. He sent six aces by the Swiss star, along with 35 winners. Dimitrov played his game with confidence on a day when Federer obviously did not have his full game with him. Like Medvedev, Dimitrov would advance to his first career Grand Slam final with a win; his last semifinal appearance came in 2017 at the Australian Open. He is 6-3 in his last nine hardcourt surface matches. Given the size of the upset that Dimitrov pulled off, can he regroup himself after that five-set marathon and win again? The two have played twice, both in 2017, and both have won once. With Dimitrov, matters tend to be feast or famine in terms of quality of play, so I’m going with the steadier player. US Open Men’s Semifinal Prediction: Medvedev wins in four sets

#24 Matteo Berrettini vs #2 Rafael Nadal (6:00pm ET)

Nadal basically took Diego Schwartzman apart in their quarterfinal matchup, winning almost half of his receiving points and breaking Schwartzman eight different times. Schwartzman was able to challenge on his serve several times, but Nadal still won almost three-fourths of his service game. In the entire tournament, Nadal has only dropped one single set, and his form looks terrific heading into his match with Berrettini. Berrettini had a much more grueling quarterfinal than Nadal, needing five sets — including a tiebreaker in that last set. He broke Monfils six times and won 75 percent of his own service games. Berrettini has two ATP titles in the last 12 months, and now he takes another huge step with his first Grand Slam semifinal. Can he pull off what would be a mammoth upset against Nadal, who has looked unbeatable in each of these first five rounds? The two have never met in an ATP tournament. Even though Berrettini continues to grow in terms of becoming an elite player in this game, it is hard to see him knocking off Nadal this close to the championship. US Open Men’s Semifinal Prediction: Nadal wins in straight sets
