Australian Open 2023 Update: Tennis Betting Preview

Written by on December 28, 2022

The 2023 Australian Open begins on January 16, and as Rafael Nadal prepares to defend his men’s singles title, he will have an obstacle in his path that was not present in 2022: Novak Djokovic, who returns to the year’s first Grand Slam. Last year, he was expelled from Australia for failure to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, but those requirements have been waived this time around. Both of these titans of men’s tennis have a number of younger players looking to supplant them as the next generation of champions as well. The women’s game was dominated by Iga Swiatek in 2022, but she also has some younger foes looking to knock her off her pedestal. Check out some of our Australian Open betting insights about tennis’ next signature event.

Men’s Singles

Carlos Alcaraz comes in ranked #1 in the world – at the young age of 19. On the hard court, he has won 49 of 63 pro matches overall; in 2022, he won 21 of 25 matches and won two titles, including the U.S. Open. At Melbourne, he only advanced to the third round, but his confidence grew as the year passed by, and so did his results.

Rafael Nadal won two Grand Slam titles in 2022: the Australian Open and the French Open. His win at Roland Garros happened in spite of a debilitating foot injury that required multiple cortisone injections just for him to be able to take the court. He won 24 of 27 matches on the hard court last year.

Casper Ruud went 18-8 on the hard court in 2022 and has a 60% victory percentage on the surface overall as a pro. He did not play in the Australian Open last year; his best result at Melbourne came two years ago, when he made it to the fourth round but had to retire due to injury. He made a huge name for himself at the U.S. Open, where he made it to the final before falling to Alcaraz.

Stefanos Tsitsipas posted an 18-9 record in hard court matches in 2022 and has a 65% winning percentage on the surface overall. In 2019, 2021 and 2022, he made it to the semifinals each time at Melbourne, so he could be due to win two more matches there this time around.

Novak Djokovic has a dominant 86% winning percentage on hard courts for his career. He only played in three hard court matches in 2022, though, winning twice. He has won the Australian Open nine times, most recently in 2021. He should arrive at Melbourne with a massive chip on his shoulder after last year’s debacle, but will that be enough?

Women’s Singles

Iga Swiatek has a 75% winning percentage in hard court matches overall and was even more dominant in 2022, winning 42 of 48 matches on the surface. She made the semifinals at Melbourne last year but went on to win the French Open (on clay) and the U.S. Open (hard court).

Ons Jabeur did lose 12 of her 31 matches on hard court surfaces last year, and her best Australian Open result came back in 2020, when she advanced to the quarterfinals. However, she did better at the U.S. Open last year, making it to the final before losing.

Jessica Pegula did win a hard court title in 2022, but overall she went 28-15 on the surface. Her best result at the Australian Open has come in the last two years, when she made it to the quarterfinals eac time. She also made the quarters at the U.S. Open.

Aryna Sabalenka has won 70% of her hard court matches as a pro but only won 57% of them in 2022 (20-15). Her best Australian Open results have come the last two years, when she made it to the fourth round. She did make the semis at the U.S. Open.
