Seeds: Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Alexander Bublik, Sebastian Baez, Cerundolo, Mariano Navone, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

One intriguing Tuesday match involves sixth seed Mariano Navone against Kei Nishikori. Nishikori pits a seeded player who has never won a career match on clay against a pro whose career dates back to 2005 and who has a 48-28 lifetime record on grass.

Navone has a 215-117 career match record, but all but 16 of those matches have come on the clay. On grass, he has a career 0-4 record including an 0-1 mark this year. Nishikori hasn’t played on grass since 2019, but he has winning records on the surface in 2012 and each year from 2014-2019.

This year has been fairly mixed for him as he attempts to return to elite tennis, and it will be interesting to see how far he can push Navone.

Another interesting match on Tuesday involves two unseeded players – 39th-ranked Cameron Norrie and 87th-ranked Emil Ruusuvuori. Norrie was ranked as high as eighth in the world in March 2022 while Ruusuvuori made it as high as 37 in March 2023.

Ruusuvuori has the most recent win in the series between these two players, coming at the quarterfinals of the 2021 Truist Atlanta Open, leaving them tied at 1-1 all-time.

Both of these players have had a hard time getting past the second round in recent events and both have losing records over their last 10 matches (Norrie 4-6, Ruusuvuori 2-8).

One more vulnerable seed on the men’s side is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, set to face Lorenzo Sonego on Tuesday. Fokina has historically played poorly on grass. He did get out of the first round last week but needed three sets to get by Alejandro Tabilo.

Last year, Fokina did not play Eastbourne, opting instead for Mallorca, where Pavel Kotov ousted him in the first round. He has won just once in his last five.

Sonego has lost three of his last five, but his most recent loss came against Alexander Zverev in straight sets. He won the 2019 grass championship at Antalya, and he has a booming serve and forehand, which works well on the grass.

On the women’s side, sixth-seeded Daria Kasatkina faces Wang Xinyu. Wang has the only win in the rivalry come back in October 2023 in the second round of the China Open.

Kasatkina is currently ranked 14th in the world while Wang is ranked 40th. Both of these players have a 62% match winning percentage so far in 2024, while Wang’s aces per game is almost double that of Kasatkina – but Kasatkina’s winning percentage in deciding sets (60%) is ten higher than Wang’s.

Given their fairly even showing in form this year, I’m likely to back the unseeded Wang and take the value.

Seeds: Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, Keys, Jelena Ostapenko, Daria Kasatkina, Barbora Krejcikova, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
