The 2021 French Open will have spectators — as many as 5,388 per day over the course of the tournament. The French Tennis Federation had taken some heat after opting to move the start of the tournament back by a week, but the possibility of having spectators in the stands makes the delay worthwhile. It remains possible that, as the tournament progresses, if matters can proceed without a COVID-19 outbreak, the crowd sizes could grow over 13,000 per day, but that remains speculation for now.

A couple of news items from the Italian Open could influence your wagering choices at Roland-Garros. Serena Williams, winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, had her 1,000th match as a member of the WTA in the second round in Rome, taking on Nadia Podoroska of Argentina. However, things did not go her way, as she lost in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 7-5. This was Serena’s first competitive match in almost three months. Now her record is 851-149 overall. Podoroska had reached the semifinals of the French Open a year ago, and she utilized heavy topspin on her forehand to take over the match, which was fairly even until a break early in the second set. Williams broke Podoroska to love when Podoroska had her first opportunity to win on serve, but she bounced back and broke Williams to take the win, advancing to the round of 16.
Naomi Osaka, ranked #2 in the world, also fell in the second round of the Italian Open. Jessic Pegula of the United States knocked Osaka out, 7-6 (2), 6-2. Osaka’s clay game is suspect at this point in time, as she also went home after the second round at the Madrid Open in April. Osaka deserves her high international ranking, but her inconsistency on clay continues.
Simona Halep, one of the co-favorites of the French Open, had to retire from her second-round match in Rome. She was leading, 6-1, 3-3, against Angelique Kerber, but discomfort in her left calf forced her to stop and take treatment. She ended up retiring and needed assistance to leave the court, as she had difficulty walking. She may not be able to enter the French Open at all, as the tournament begins May 30.
