Rafael Nadal suffered a stress fracture in a rib in March at OIndian Wells, where he fell to the United States’ Taylro Fritz in the final, losing in straight sets. He was supposed to be on the shelf for up to six weeks, but Nadal is apparently looking at playing in the Madrid Open as a sort of tune-up. The clay event begins this weekend, so entering involves some risk Nadal hopes that the play will help him shake off the rust without re-aggravating the injury.

Stefanos Tsitsipas sits atop the French Open power rankings after beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the finals at Monte Carlo, but his 6-3, 7-6 win was particularly impressive when you remember that it has been just five months since Tsitsipas had elbow surgery – and that Davidovich Fokina had beaten Novak Djokovic to get to the final. It helped Tsitsipas that Djokovic didn’t make the final and that Nadal has not played yet since his rib injury, but Tsitsipas is the top-ranked player in those rankings…for now.

Diego Schwartzman is an intriguing clay player. Standing just 5’7”, he is one of the shortest men’s pro players in the world, but on clay, he has won over 65% of his matches, a percentage similar to that of Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev, and he has won 16 matches at Roland Garros over the last five years.

Fabio Fognini is another player showing a wide discrepancy between his ATP rating and his FRench Open power ranking. Fognini plays better on clay than on grass or the hard court, but it has been seven years since he made it to the semifinals, and he got drilled by Tsitsipas, 6-3, 6-0, at Monte Carlo, so he will need to show something in another tune-up or in the opening rounds at Roland Garros to get serious attention.

Roberto Bautista Agut has won plenty of matches in the French Open over the last five years, and he has played well so far in 2022. However, he had to withdraw from Monte Carlo due to a wrist injury and will sit out Barcelona, so we will see how his injury status looks in the coming weeks.
