French Open Underdogs to Consider for Men's & Women's Singles

French Open Underdogs to Consider for Men’s & Women’s Singles

Written by on May 23, 2024

If you have followed professional tennis, either as a casual fan or as a sports betting enthusiast, for the past few years, it might seem like the men’s ranks are dominated by Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, while the women’s ranks are controlled by Iga Swiatek. However, even the heaviest favorites aren’t guaranteed wins. Think back to 2018, when Marco Cecchinato stopped Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Cecchinato had never even won a Grand Slam match in his career and entered Roland Garros ranked #72 in the world. However, he won in four grueling sets, with two going to tiebreakers, and he became the first Italian to get to a Grand Slam semifina since 1978 and the lowest ranked player to get to a French Open semifinal since 1999, when 100th-ranked Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine advanced that far. What French Open Underdogs should you consider in the 2024 French Open? Read on for some suggestions in the men’s and women’s singles draws.

Men’s Singles at Roland Garros

Andrey Rublev has never made it to a Grand Slam semifinal even though he is regularly among the highest-ranked men’s tennis players in the world. That could change in 2024 as he won the Madrid Open for the frist time this year, stopping Alcaraz in the quarterfinals in his most significant clay-court win ever. However, Rublev has to figure out how to win a quarterfinal match at a Grand Slam. He has appeared in 10 Grand Slam quarterfinals without getting one win; two of those losses coming at the French Open in 2020 and 2022. However, with a significant clay court tournament win now on his resume, it will be interesting to see how deep his Roland Garros run goes this year.

Ben Shelton has a clay-court title on his resume, but it’s a little less glamorous than the Monte Carlo Masters as he won the ATP 250 in Houston. His game is well suited for clay, as he has a huge serve and can cover the court well. He didn’t play that well in the European clay season, but he could figure things out. In the final in Houston, he took three of his four victories in the last set, showing that he can bounce back. Given the relatively open path that dark horses have to victory, Shelton will try to surprise more opponents this time around.

Nicholas Jarry was impressive at the Italian Open, rolling past Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals and Tommy Paul in the semifinals. However, his big run stopped in the final as Alexander Zverev took the title. Jarry has a booming serve in Rome, but consistency was a bit of an issue. If he can lock down his technique, he could line up some upsets in Paris as well.

Women’s Singles at Roland Garros

Qinwen Zheng got off to a terrific start to 2024, rolling to the Australian Open final before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. Just 21, she showed tremendous grit and fight. During the claycourt season, though, she has had some difficulties, such as her second-round withdrawal in Madrid as an injury caused her to give Yulia Putintseva a walkover. She did get to the quarters at the Italian Open, but if she can get back to her Australian Open form, she could turn some heads.

Danielle Collins will retire when this season winds down, but her final season has been a terrific one. She wasn’t happy with her play at Indian Wells, but she did bounce back in Miami to win the WTA 1000 title. She followed that up with a trophy at Charleston on clay. She advanced to the semis at the Italian Open, where Sabalenka stopped her. She already has wins over the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sakkari in the last few weeks.

Madison Keys has the big serve that you need on the clay, and she used it to get to the Madrid Open semifinals, where Iga Swiatek stopped her. Along the way, she beat Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur. At the Italian Open, she marched to the quarterfinals, where she lost to Swiatek again. Can she get revenge and a title? We will see.
