French Open Betting Upsets, Favorites and Surprises

Going into the 2024 French Open, it looked like this would be Rafael Nadal’s last appearance. He has suffered a number of injuries over the past couple of years, and his first-round loss to Alexander Zverev was just the latest in a number of frustrations. The organizers of the French Open had planned a farewell ceremony for Nadal before the match, but then Nadal looked to be reconsidering his decision and now might come back in 2025. Zverev sent Nadal packing in three straight sets, but Zverev also believes that a healthy Nadal could, over the next year, rebound and gain seeded status once again at Roland Garros next year. He currently sits at #76 in the ATP world rankings. So far there have been some significant upsets through the first three rounds. Let’s take a look at some of those as you plan your online betting for the weekend.

Matteo Arnaldi stops sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev

Arnaldi was able to save a set point in the first set and took charge from then on, controlling the match against an emotional Rublev, who would berate himself as the match went on, hitting his legs with his racket and kicking his bench. Arnaldi also got to the fourth round of the 2023 U.S. Open and prevailed on Friday, 7-6(8), 6-2, 6-4. Now Arnaldi advances to the round of 16, while Rublev remained frustrated. The furthest Rublev has advanced at a Grand Slam is the quarterfinal round, where he has been stopped 10 times. Next up for Rublev is Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Zhang Zhizhen, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. Tsitsipas has reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros for the sixth straight year.

Rublev had the early edge but could not convert that set point. The players exchanged service breaks in the early going of the second set, but Rublev was frustrated that his forehand could not break through Arnaldi’s defenses. Arnaldi took advantage of a moist surface, breaking for a 4-3 lead in the third set. This was Arnaldi’s first win at a Grand Slam event agains a top-ten opponent.

Other men’s seeds who are going home early are 25-seed Frances Tiafoe and 31-seed Mariano Navone. Denis Shapovalov needed four sets to eliminate Tiafoe, who hit a ball off the side of his opponent’s head while making a shot on the run. That made the post-match handshake between the two friends a little saltier than it would otherwise have been.

Peyton Stearns upsets tenth-seeded Daria Kasatkina

One of Peyton Stearns’ career highlights to this point has been her NCAA singles title while playing at the University of Texas. She took advantage of slow, cold conditions to blister 17 forehand winners by Kasatkina and prevail, 7-5, 6-2. The match did not begin until after 9:00 pm local time and ended after 10:30. Kasatkina had advanced to the semifinals at Roland Garros back in 2022.

Another upset on the women’s side came when Mirra Andreeva needed three sets to stop 19th-seeded Victoria Azarenka, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Azarenka has won the Australian Open twice and is now 34 – twice the age of Andreeva. Andreeva and Stearns will meet in a clash to get to the fourth round.

On the women’s side, other seeds who are leaving early, include ninth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, who fell to Clara Tauson, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3. Eleventh seed Danielle Collins lost to Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic, 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4. The 18-seed, Marta Kostyuk, lost to Donna Vekic in straight sets, and 23-seed Anna Kalinskaya, who lost 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Bianca Andreescu, who won the 2019 U.S. Open but has fought injuries on and off since then.
