Ruud upsets Auger-Aliassime

In the first round, Casper Ruud upset Felix Auger-Aliassime. It took Ruud 91 minutes to knock out the 15th seed, 6-1, 6-4. Ruud noted that the high altitude and generous bounces off the clay in Madrid make the conditions somewhat different than the other major clay events. Ruud is now 7-2 on clay in European tournaments in 2021 and is looking to make his fifth consecutive run to at least the quarterfinals in ATP Tour events. Ruud made the semifinals at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters and the BMW Open in Munich. Auger-Aliassime made some key errors in the first set that let Ruud break twice, at 2-1 and then again at 4-1. Ruud saved a pair of break points at 2-2 in the second set, and then he won the seventh game as Auger-Aliassime hit a forehand approach right into the net.

Paire cools off BMW Open champ Basilashvili

Benoit Paire got 14 aces by Nikoloz Basilashvili in another first-round win, prevailing 6-4, 7-5 in just 73 minutes. Next up for Paire is Stefanos Tsitsipas, who won the Monte-Carlo Masters and was the runner-up at the Barcelona Open, where he fell to Rafael Nadal. That win ended a seven-match losing streak for Paire. He saved eight of 11 break points to pick up his first win since February, when he beat Nicolas Jarry in Cordoba. Paire had also been removed from the French Olympic team for violations of team rules, but he sees this win over Basilashvili as a way to rejuvenate his confidence.

Paula Badosa goes from wild card to quarterfinalist

Badosa won the French Open girls’ singles title in 2015 and is at her best on clay, having gotten to the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2020. She made the semifinals at the Charleston Open and is now ranked #62 in the world. She is the first wild card entrant in the Madrid Open to make the quarterfinals since 2017. She has drawn comparisons with Maria Sharapova because of their play — both like to be aggressive from the baseline, and they both grunt when they hit the ball. At the Madrid Open, she beat Barbora Krejcikova and Jil Teichmann to earn a battle with Anastasija Sevastova. Badosa lost the first set but then won the next two to advance. Her next test will be Belinda Bencic, ranked 12th in the world. She beat Bencic at the Charleston Open, where she also beat Ashleigh Barty. So if you’re looking for the latest dark horse in the women’s draw, here’s one to consider while the value is still there.
