Tennis Betting Picks for Quarterfinal in Tata Open Maharashtra

Written by on January 3, 2023

South Asia’s only ATP 250 event is the Tata Open Maharashtra and dates back to 1996. It started as the McDowell Open and has had several rebrandings since then. It moved to Pune, India, in 2018, to take on its present form. The men’s singles draw opened with 28 players, including four qualifiers and three wild cards, and now the hard court event is down to eight players left in the men’s singles draw. Let’s take a look at the matchups as you consider your tennis betting on the outcomes.

Tennis News: 2023 Tata Open Maharashtra Quarterfinal Preview

Thursday, January 5

Pedro Martinez (+178) vs Aslan Karatsev (-245) (3:30 am ET)

Martinez has won both matches so far, needing three sets to prevail after dropping the initial set each time. He lost the first set against local favorite Ramkumar Ramanathan in the opening round, but he got the momentum back in the second and rolled in the third, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. He met fourth seed Sebastian Baez in the second round, and it also took Martinez a set to figure out his opponent, but he ultimately cruised, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Karatsev has advanced in straight sets in both of his first two matches, but Tim van Rijthoven made things interesting in the second set. In the opener, he routed Pablo Andujar, 6-1, 6-3, but van Rijthoven pushed him to tiebreakers in both sets, as Karatsev prevailed, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (10-8). Karatsev is the favorite here due to his seeded status, but Martinez looks to be on a roll and didn’t have to expend as much energy in the second round. Martinez to win.

Marin. Cilic (-238) vs Tallon Griekspoor (+195) (4:50 am ET)

Cilic had a bye into the second round, where he struggled against Roberto Carballes Baena before ultimately picking up the win. Cilic won the first set easily, but Carballes Baena pushed matters to a third set. Cilic reversed the momentum, though, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Griekspoor has won both of his matches in straight sets, sending seventh seed Jaume Munar home, 6-4, 7-5, in the opening round. In the round of 16, he rolled over Marco Cecchinato, 6-4, 6-4. This is the first meeting between Cilic and Griekspoor, but Cilic’s heavy edge in experience as well as level of competition makes him the smart pick here after shaking off that rust in the round of 16. Cilic to win.

Maximilian Marterer vs Botic van de Zandschulp (8:00 am ET)

Van de Zandschulp received a bye through the first round and beat Flavio Cobolli, 7-5, 6-4, in straight sets int he round of 16. Cobolli pushed van de Zandschulp hard, but there’s a reason why van de Zandschulp has moved up to #35 in the international men’s rankings.

Marterer has won both matches despite being below them in the ATP rankings. He had to move through qualifiers to get into the bracket, but he took down Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Nikola Milojevic to make the field of 28. In the first round, he needed three sets to eliminate Elias Ymer, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. He took down Laslo Djere in the round of 16, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. It is worth noting that he has fired 23 aces so far. Even so, it is difficult to pick Marterer here. In their previous meeting at Koblenz on the Challenger circuit, van de Zandschulp rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win. Van de Zandschulp to win.

Filip Krajinovic (+105) vs Benjamin Bonzi (-125) (9:20 am ET)

Krajinovic has had two draining matches so far at the Maharashtra Open. He needed three sets to beat India’s Sumit Nagal, which sent him to meet Michael Mmoh of the United States in the round of 16. Mmoh took the first set easily, but Krajinovic found a new gear and won the next two, prevailing, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Krajinovic has posted 17 aces in the first two rounds but needs more consistency going forward.

Bonzi routed Tseng Chun-hsin in the first round, 6-0, 6-3. That earned him a date with third seed Emil Ruusuvuori, but Bonzi was unfazed, delivering an easy 6-1 win in the first set. Ruusuvuori tried to turn things around in the second set, but Bonzi prevailed, 7-6 (7-4) to take the match. In a tight match like this, I would normally go with the value, but Bonzi’s first two rounds have been more impressive. Bonzi to win.
