Professional tennis returns to Munich this last week in April after the COVID-19 pandemic forced a cancellation of the 2020 BMW Open. Alexander Zverev returns, seeking his second tournament title in 2021 and his third championship in Munich. He won this tournament in 2017 and 2018. After the Round of 16, he was the first player through, winning in straight sets. How will the tournament finish?

Alexander Zverev was spared the possibility of a matchup with Emil Ruusuvuori in the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old Finn had delivered a stunning upset over Zverev in March at the Miami Open, losing the first set, 1-6, but then storming back to win the next two, 6-3 and 6-1. Casper Ruud has held his own as a top player on clay, but third seed Aslan Karatsev bowed out early after winning his first tournament title in Dubai.
Federico Coria had lost five matches in a row before grinding out a success against Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the first round. He gets an unseeded opponent in the third round in Norbert Gombos. There are only five places separating these two in the overall rankings, so this should be close. The fact that Coria broke that streak gives him a slight edge, although I wouldn’t bet heavily on him.
Final Prediction:
Coria wins in three.
Nikoloz Basilashvili was near the bottom of the Top 50 rankings in 2020. However, no one thought he would beat Roger Federer in Dubai, and he did. He has dropped five of eight since then. On clay, though, he has won Masters 500 tournaments (this is just a Masters 250), and he should play better than he did in Barcelona, Monte-Carlo or Cagliari. He faces Daniel Galan Riveros, who took down Sebastian Korda in impressive fashion but does not have a compatible game to beat Basilashvili.
Final Prediction:
Basilashvili wins in three.
Filip Kravjinovic has a reputation for giving up crucial points at key times that keep him from finishing opponents off. He beats the easy players but loses in more competitive matches. Even so, Hanfmann is closer to the easy type for him.
Final Prediction:
Kravjinovic wins in straight sets
Dominick Koepfer has shown that he is a tough player on clay. So has Jan-Lennard Struff. Struff has a bigger serve; can Koepfer keep up? The two have never met. I like Struff to carry the day with his big serve, but again, I wouldn’t bet heavy here.
Final Prediction:
Struff wins in three sets
