The 2021 U.S. Open is scheduled to start with qualifiers between August 24 and 27, and with the first round of play to begin on August 30. Novak Djokovic missed the chance at a Golden Slam, as he failed to medal at the Tokyo Olympics, but he can still win the calendar year Grand Slam for the first time since Australian Rod Laver pulled off the feat in 1969 with a win at Flushing Meadows.
Let’s take a look at the early odds for winners in the singles draws, along with other updates as you consider your online betting choices for the tournament.

Novak Djokovic is the heavy favorite in the men’s draw, but you should consider his decision to skip the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati ahead of the U.S. Open. That means he will show up for the tournament without having played a competitive match since he lost the bronze medal match in Tokyo and flung his racket into the stands. In his statement explaining his decision not to play in Cincinnati, he noted multiple injuries as well as “abnormal pain and exhaustion.” Some of this fatigue came from the high levels of heat and humidity in Tokyo; some of it came from his decision to play mixed doubles and singles, which meant he took part in 16 sets of tennis in a little over four days. He went against the advice of his teammates when he entered the mixed doubles, and that may have taken its toll.
When Djokovic threw his racket into the stands, that had to remind viewers of the scene that unfolded in New York a year ago, when Djokovic was disqualified from the U.S. Open for hitting the ball in the direction of a line judge out of frustration. Skipping Cincinnati and Canada has only happened one other time in Djokovic’s career, and he didn’t win the U.S. Open afterward. He has won at Flushing Meadows three times, and in each year, he played in both of those warmup events ahead of time.
Three other players in the men’s draw who will miss Cincinnati are Milos Raonic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Nadal had started his warmup play for the U.S. Open in Washington and ended up losing early. He left the Toronto Masters 1000 tournament with an injury to his left foot. He said that this is a recurring issue that has plagued him since 2005 and contributed to his loss to Djokovic at the French Open semifinals this year. Raonic is out due to a heel injury, and his 2021 has featured a number of missed matches with a variety of maladies. On the women’s side, Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin will all skip Cincinnati as well, adding to the intrigue of planning your sports betting.
