Teenage tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva is at the center of a controversy after falling in the Round of 16 to Madison Keys. Andreeva was docked a point for throwing her racket when she was serving at 2-5 down in the third and final set. Andreeva lost her footing while trying to answer a shot from Keys; while on the way down, her racket was slammed against the grass. The umpire found the gesture to be intentional and granted Keys match point. Keys then won the point to advance to the quarterfinals. Andreeva’s intent seemed unclear from the footage, and Chris Hasek-Watt, host of Love Means Nothing, a tennis podcast, tweeted “It looks like she slipped and then intentionally let her racket go in some frustration. Regardless, an umpire’s job is to understand the match and use discretion. Dumb call.” Either way, Keys has moved on to the quarterfinals. Let’s break down some Wimbledon betting picks from the men’s an women’s singles quarterfinal round.

Madison Keys vs Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka snagged her own berth in the quarterfinals when she stopped 21-seed Ekaterina Alexandrova emphatically, 6-4, 6-0. Once Sabalenka was able to break Alexandrova’s serve in the last game of the first set, the match turned from an even one to a rout, and Sabalenka only lost 11 points the rest of the way.
Keys needed three sets to stop Andreeva, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2. Keys showed that she was the stronger and more consistent player, while Andreeva was the more creative one, using a blend of shots to disrupt Keys’ rhythm. Keys took advantage of Andreeva’s double fault in the second game of the third set and enforced her will; even with the disputed point, Keys looked like she was heading for the win. Sabalenka to win.

Ons Jabeur vs Elena Rybakina
Rybakina continues her 2022 title defense after advancing past Beatriz Haddad Maia in the fourth round. Haddad Maia had already beaten Rybakina twice in 2023, but Rybakina benefited from an early injury and retirement, stopping at 4-1 of the first set.
Jabeur met Petra Kvitova, who has two Wimbledon titles of her own, in the fourth round. Jabeur steamrolled Kvitova in the first round, 6-0, and went up 4-1 in the second set. Kvitova fought back to make it 4-3, but then Jabeur won the next two to salt away the win, 6-3. The two players have split their four previous meetings; Rybakina beat Jabeur in the Wimbledon final last year. Jabeur’s form so far looks better in this tournament. Jabeur to win.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Holger Rune
Alcaraz faced his first major test of the 2023 tournament in the fourth round, losing the first set, 6-3, to Matteo Berrettini, who made it to the final in 2021. Alcaraz won the second and third sets in 6-3 fashion. He is now 44-4 in 2023 and has an 8-2 all-time record at Wimbledon.
Rune needed four sets to stop Grigor Dimitrov, who actually went up a set and a break. Rune came back to push the second set to a tiebreak, which he won. He forced another tiebreak in the third set, winning that as well, and then he needed just one break to take the fourth set, totaling 46 winners on the day. Alcaraz and Rune have never met on grass; they have split two meetings, but Rune’s win came due to injury retirement at the Paris Masters quarterfinals last year. Alcaraz to win.

Daniil Medvedev vs Christopher Eubanks
Medvedev met Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round, breaking his serve in the match’s opening game. He rolled to a 6-4 win in the first set and then broke Lehecka twice in the second, winning 6-2. However, Lehecka had to retire due to injury at that point, allowing Medvedev to advance.
Christopher Eubanks, an unseeded American, has beaten Thiago Monteiro, Cameron Norrie, Christopher O’Connell and Stefanos Tsitsipas to get to the quarterfinals. Eubanks dropped the first set in his fourth-round match as Tsitsipas broke him twice. Eubanks won a tiebreak to take the second set, but then Tsitsipas took the third set. He broke Tsitsipas once in the fourth set and was up 2-0 in the fifth set before Tsitsipas made the set level. Eubanks took one more break and kept going to take the win, 3-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Eubanks and Medvedev have met just once, at the 2023 Miami Open, where Medvedev won in straight sets – and Medvedev had a much less taxing fourth-round match. Medvedev to win.
