Wimbledon Updates for July 2: Stephens, Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Djokovic

Written by on July 1, 2021

Roger Federer, who turns 40 in August, is the oldest man to make it to the third round of Wimbledon since 1975, when Ken Rosewall made it to the fourth round at the age of 40. Federer beat Richard Gasquet for the 11th time, winning all of his service games. This was just Federer’s tenth match of 2021, so it will be interesting to see how far he makes it. He’s in the running for his ninth title at Wimbledon and his 21st title at a major. The men’s singles draw still includes Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini and Novak Djokovic, so Federer still has a steep mountain to climb. His next match will come on Saturday against Brit Cam Norrie.

Tennis News: Wimbledon Updates (July 2)

Stephens goes down in the third round

American Sloane Stephens started her Wimbledon journey with an impressive win over Petra Kvitova in the first round, but wild card Liudmila Samsonova upset Stephens in the third round, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Samsonova is at Wimbledon for the first time, and she is one of only two wild cards still alive in the women’s singles bracket. Samsonova had four aces on the day and had 31 winning points to just four for Stephens. Samsonova won the Berlin grass tournament, taking her first WTA title by beating the likes of Madison Keys, Belinda Bencic and Victoria Azarenka. With that kind of momentum, Samsonova could offer additional betting value as she progresses.

Sabalenka makes it to the fourth round

Second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka took down qualifier Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, 6-0, 6-3 to get to the fourth round. Sabalenka is the only woman in the top 20 seeds who has never reached the quarterfinal of a major. She has 32 wins in matches this season, and eight of the top 11 women in the draw are already gone. She allowed Osorio Serrano to get to six break points, but Osorio Serrano was not successful in converting any of them. Could Sabalenka finally break through and win this time?

Coco Gauff making another run at Wimbledon

Now 17, Coco Gauff rolled into the third round on Thursday with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Elena Vesnina on Centre Court on Thursday, posting nine aces. In 2019, Gauff made her debut in a major main draw in 2019, beating Venus Williams in the first round and rolling all the way to the fourth round, where the eventual champ, Simona Halep, brought that run to an end. Since then, she has made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open in 2020 and reached the quarterfinals at the French Open last month. She has two WTA singles titles, including one at Parma in May. She was just named to the United States’ Olympic team for Tokyo. Her next match will come on Saturday against Kaja Juvan. Gauff has an open draw ahead of her, as Angelique Kerber as the only seeded player left ahead of her at the round of 16, and with no top-ten seeds left in her quarter of the draft.

Djokovic makes it 17 straight wins in Grand Slam matches

Novak Djokovic beat American qualifier Denis Kudla in the third round on Friday, rolling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7). This makes 17 straight wins in Grand Slam matches for Djokovic, as well as 17 straight wins at Wimbledon, where he remains the two-time defending champ. He did commit 28 unforced errors, a number that needs to decrease. He plays 17-seeded Cristian Garin from Chile on Monday in the fourth round. Djokovic remains the clear favorite in the men’s singles draw, even though the men’s draw has retained more of its top seeds than has the women’s to this point.
