The historic Madison Square Garden in New York City is the site for UFC 244: Masvidal vs Diaz on Saturday. This will be the 500th live event staged by UFC. The main event is a welterweight tilt between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, winner of The Ultimate Fighter 5 (lightweight division) and a former UFC Lightweight Championship challenger. Diaz had challenged Masvidal after beating Anthony Pettis at UFC 241, calling himself the “baddest motherfucker in the game.” As a result, UFC President Dana White has said that a “BMF” belt will be handed to the winner of this fight. It looked like Diaz might have to sit out after failing a drug test, but he was cleared and will participate. The co-headliner is a middleweight fight between Kelvin Gastelum and Darren Till. We have the whole fight card for you as well as UFC betting thoughts on some of the matchups.

Jorge Masvidal (34-13) vs Nate Diaz (20-11)

This one pits two of the more entertaining UFC fighters against one another, thanks to their bravado inside the cage and their willingness to call others out. Diaz started to build his own following when he flexed in the middle of a triangle choke against Kurt Pellegrino. One of his biggest breakout wins was his punishment of Donald Cerrone. Losses to Benson Henderson in a title bout and then against Josh Thomson set him back, but then he built his way back into a rivalry for Conor McGregor. Masvidal went through just about every MMA promotion before entering UFC when it absorbed Strikeforce. His skills are elite, but his decision making often lands him in trouble in the cage. He moved to welterweight after losing to Al Iaquinta, and his comeback win over Darren Till earlier in 2019 showed that he may well have moved past those strategic blunders. He opened his last fight with Ben Askren with a flying knee that resulted in the fastest finish in the history of UFC. Like Diaz, he is using this fight to get into contender status. Diaz likes to grapple, but Masvidal has the defense to stave him off and the striking game to outpoint him. Final Prediction: Masvidal wins via decision

Kelvin Gastelum (15-4) vs Darren Till (17-2-1)

It features one of the more opportunistic fighters in the sport in Till, who filled in at the last minute for a main event for UFC in Poland, and he finished Donald Cerrone, giving him another headliner bout against Stephen Thompson in Scotland, where he won again. He got a title bout against Tyron Woodley, but he took a beating and then lost to Jorge Masvidal. He decided to go up to middleweight, which makes sense given his stature, and his fight against Gastelum makes quite a challenging debut at this weight class. Gastelum won the middleweight division in Season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” After that, he was given a series of fights against big names who were on the decline, so it was hard to determine whether how much of the success was earned and how much of it came from a downturn in his opponents’ skills. His last two bouts, wins over Ronaldo Souza and Israel Adesanya, showed that he still brings constant pressure, and if he can beat Till, he should get another shot at a title. Till has the size advantage, but Gastelum has the advantage of speed and pressure. Final Prediction: Gastelum wins via decision
