Jessica Eye (-115) vs Cynthia Calvillo (-105) gives us arguably the second-best flyweight on the women’s side of UFC in Eye. She rebounded form a four-fight losing streak, in which she had all four fights in hand but then made bad decisions that allowed her opponent to come back. Since dropping to flyweight, she put together a three-fight winning streak, including an impressive win on the cards over Katlyn Chookagian, in which Eye had to push the action against a defensive fighter simply looking to tally points. Eye got a title shot against Valentina Shevchenko but got taken to the woodshed, as Shevchenko was noticeably better both in the grapple and standing up, knocking Eye out in the second round with a head kick. For now, Eye is trying to close the gap between herself and Shevchenko and get a title rematch. In her last fight, a win over Viviane Araujo, she showed some growth in her boxing game and ended up with a convincing victory.

This will be Calvillo’s UFC flyweight debut. She started one weight division lower and got two easy submission wins to start her time in the promotion. She also beat Joanne Calderwood on the cards in her first co-headliner appearance, but Carla Esparza showed her limitations. One problem that Calvillo has is that she thinks she is a more effective striker than she is, and against Esparza, she was just taken apart in points. Against Maria Rodriguez, Calvillo showed some more wrestling savvy, getting her to the ground enough times to salvage a draw out of the fight, but she still had to absorb a ton of punishment before she made that adjustment. Until Calvillo realizes that she is not as good in the striking game as she thinks she is and starts resorting to grappling, she will have a hard time getting wins.

If the fight stays upright, Eye should win this. She should be able to deliver enough punishment to get the points, although Calvillo should realize this and go after takedowns early. Eye’s defense on the wrestling side is in need of improvement. If this is a boxing clinic, then Eye will win. I see Eye doing enough to stay up and get those points.

  • UFC on ESPN 10 Prediction: Eye wins via decision

Martin Vettori (-220) vs Karl Roberson (+180) has a little added controversy after Roberson failed to make weight when he and Vettori were set to fight in Jacksonville. Vettori had some things to say about that and will have some motivation in the early parts of the fight. Roberson does best when he can stay upright, although he was also aboet to finish Roman Kpylov and Darren Stewart on the mat.

Vettori has developed from a fighter with little technique to one who delivers constant pressure. He only has one submission win, but that pressure will keep adding wins for him. His last two wins came over Cezar Ferreira and Andrew Sanchez, and he is looking for a statement win to add to his resume.

Roberson will be able to deliver some punishment if the fight stays upright. When he has a physical advantage over his opponent, that is when he gets the best results. However, Vettori is a terrific athlete and brings aggression from the opening bell. Expect Vettori to push through Roberson’s punishment.
