NCAAB Betting: Villanova Wildcats vs DePaul Blue Demons

Posted by Efrain Valerio on January 30, 2015 in

There has been very little in the way of change in the Top 10 rankings over the past few weeks, but one team did take a bit of a tumble when last week’s rankings were released. Villanova, currently ranked #7, saw themselves fall out of the top 5 after a surprise loss to Georgetown, where they were thoroughly outplayed, as well as being outscored 78-58.

Date/Time: Saturday, January 31st, 2:00 PM
Location: Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Illinois
NCAAB Betting Spread: Villanova -12

The mark of any good team is how they respond to adversity, and Villanova certainly bounced back quite nicely from that loss to post a comfortable 71-50 win over Creighton. The Wildcats (18-2, 5-2) have now seen both of their losses this season come on the road, which is why they won’t be getting to cocky when they head into AllState Arena on Saturday afternoon to face DePaul. That loss took them to second in the Big East, with Providence taking advantage of the miss-step to jump into the top spot. The Wildcats will be looking to Senior Darriun Hilliard II to continue the strong effort he put in against Creighton. Hilliard is averaging 13.4 PPG to lead the Wildcats in scoring this season, but he went on a 3-game slump were he averaged just 9 points per game before busting loose and dropping 24 on Creighton.

Villanova is 18-2 SU in its last 20 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Villanova’s last 6 games
Villanova is 13-3 SU in its last 16 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 15 of Villanova’s last 19 games on the road
Villanova is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games when playing DePaul

DePaul is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games
DePaul is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of DePaul’s last 6 games
DePaul is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games at home
The total has gone OVER in 7 of DePaul’s last 10 games at home

DePaul have a pair of players in Myke Henry and Billy Garrett Jr. averaging over 13 PPG this season, but it is not on offense where their big problems lie. The Blue Demons are giving up almost 74 points per game, which is not something that you can do if you hope to have any kind of success. They also have real problems with consistency, likely because of their inability to stop decent opponents from lighting them up. This is a team that had had a 4-game win streak followed by a 5-game skid, which was then followed by another 3-game winning run. They are now on a lose 2 win 2 streak that perfectly epitomizes their struggles to find any level of consistency.

Bad News For DePaul

Furthering the problems for DePaul on Saturday is that they are essentially coming off a day and a half rest instead of 4 days. This was due to the postponement and re-arranging of their game versus Providence because of weather. That is likely to be the least of their concerns on Saturday, though, and there is a pretty good chance that their losing streak will be extended to 3.
