College Football Week 5 SU Picks

As we move past the quarter-pole of the 2017 college football season, we see that some teams are nearing the point of jumping to the next level — Washington State and Kentucky come to mind — while others may not quite yet be ready to improve — Tennessee and Purdue definitely come to the forefront. As you consider your college football Week 5 betting picks, take a look at some straight-up picks that we have put together for you, with the latest NCAAF odds. Home teams are in all caps.

College Football Week 5 SU Picks

FLORIDA over Vanderbilt (Saturday, 12:00pm ET, ESPN) Which Florida Gators team will show up on Saturday? The one that knocked of Tennessee in miraculous fashion at home two weeks ago? Or the one that got routed by Michigan in the opener and then almost saw a 30-game winning streak over Kentucky come to an ignominious end last week? If the wrong Gators show up, then the same Vanderbilt Commodores who took down Kansas State two weeks ago could post a significant upset. The trash talk that Vanderbilt let loose ahead of their showdown with Alabama likely motivated the Crimson Tide to roll to that 59-0 shellacking last week, but these Gators have a hard time scoring — and a hard time getting key defensive stops when they need them. Vanderbilt is a pesky team, but the talent gap should favor Florida — and they should at least be able to eke out another win, even if it’s not a convincing one.

MINNESOTA over Maryland (Saturday, 12:00pm ET, FS1)

The Minnesota Golden Gophers enter Big Ten play with a 3-0 record, having beaten Buffalo, Oregon State (on the road) and Middle Tennessee by a combined score of 82-24. While none of those teams would stand much of a chance in the Big Ten, those convincing wins show that the Gophers are ready for some tougher competition. So after their bye week they prepare to face the Maryland Terrapins, who have already shown that they are wildly inconsistent. In their opener, the Terrapins went down to Texas and beat the Longhorns, 51-41, ruining the debut of new head coach Tom Herman. They followed that up with a 63-17 whitewashing of FCS foe Towson State. Are the Golden Gophers a safe pick in Week 5 against Maryland? However, after their bye week, they came out at home and took a 38-10 beating from the University of Central Florida. So while Maryland has a lot of questions to answer on both offense and defense after taking that kind of whipping from a Group of Five opponent, the Golden Gophers appear to be firing on all cylinders. I like Minnesota to win this straight up, sending Maryland to an 0-1 record in the conference.

SMU over Connecticut (Saturday, 4:00pm ET, ESPNEWS)

Southern Methodist has opened up with a 3-1 record for just the third time in the last 30 seasons, thanks to a convincing win over Arkansas State on Saturday. Their wins have come over Stephen F. Austin, North Texas and the Red Wolves, with their loss coming in 56-36 fashion at TCU two weeks ago. Ben Hicks is showing more and more promise in his sophomore season leading the Mustangs’ offense, with his turnovers way down from a year ago. His favorite wide receiver, Courtland Sutton, received double coverage through most of the Arkansas State game, but that just let Hicks find other targets down the field. Braeden West has impressed at tailback this season. The questions for SMU come on defense, as they tend to stop paying attention at just the wrong times in pass coverage, a problem that TCU exploited — and that Arkansas State put to their advantage in the first quarter last week. Connecticut comes in off a 41-38 loss at home to East Carolina a week ago — and the Pirates are not the strength of the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies opened with a win over Holy Cross but then lost on the road to Virginia two weeks ago. The fact that the Huskies surrendered 41 points to East Carolina suggests some major issues on defense — issues that the Mustangs should be able to exploit.
