New England (Super Bowl LII Odds – 7/2)
The Patriots’ defense looked terrific against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night, but I would argue that has as much to do with the mental funk that seems to have the Falcons in its grip. Their offensive line looked tentative; their pass rush started out on fire but then slowed in the second half. Tom Brady, of course, is his same old self, throwing balls with his trademark accuracy and leading his team on crucial drives. Winning a title will be tougher for the Patriots this year, with their defensive issues so far, but no one else has dethroned them yet.Pittsburgh (Super Bowl LII Odds – 9/2)
The trio of Ben Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are delivering on offense for the Steelers this year. Their defense has been better at stopping the run, although that secondary still has issues with coverage down the field. Alex Smith still looks like a new quarterback this year. He’s not throwing as many deep balls as he did in the Chiefs’ rout of New England in the season opener, but he’s still broken out of that game manager, checkdown role that he had slipped into the past few seasons. Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill have turned into legitimate stars at tailback and wide receiver, and the Chiefs’ defense is looking stout.
Seattle (Super Bowl LII Odds – 10/1)
The Seahawks may be the biggest Jekyll-and-Hyde team in the NFL right now, outside of the Dallas Cowboys. There are weeks when they look dominant on both sides of the ball, and there are weeks when they struggle to move the ball. They did win a key divisional matchup against the Rams to take the inside track on the NFC West right now. However, this team that plays so much better at home than on the road will need to find ways to even out their performance.Minnesota (Super Bowl LII Odds – 12/1)
There will come a day soon when Case Keenum will get exposed and the Vikings will start losing. It happened to Keenum when he was with the Rams, and it is just inevitable. Given that the Vikings are relying on Latavius Murray to carry the ball with Dalvin Cook on the shelf, it’s only a matter of time when defenses figure out what they already have about the Broncos — make the quarterback do the hard work, and the team will fold.
