2019 Copa America Semifinals Odds & Betting Predictions

The quarterfinals of the 2019 Copa America took place over the weekend, with three of the four matches so close that they went to penalty kicks as scoreless draws and had to be decided in shootouts. Despite taking a red card, Paraguay took Brazil to penalty kicks only to see the hosts advance, 4-3. Chile advanced over Colombia, 0-0 (5-4 PK), and Peru outlasted Uruguay, 0-0 (5-4 PK). Argentina was the only team that did not need to move to a shootout, rolling over Venezuela, 2-0. Now Brazil will face Argentina in Tuesday night, with Chile and Peru coming a night later, as the winners will advance to the Copa America final on Sunday. We have Copa America betting thoughts about both of these semifinal matches.

Brazil vs Argentina (8:30pm ET)

Brazil is the favorite here despite needing penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals. Some of this has to do with their status as the host nation, but that did not help them against Paraguay. They launched 26 shots to just five for Paraguay, and possessed 71 percent of the match, but they did not score a goal for the second match, and that offensive paralysis is a potential problem. While Brazil has also posted four clean sheets, thanks to solid defense led by Thiago Silva and terrific goalkeeping by Alisson, Brazil now has Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi playing on the opposing offense. Giovani Io Celso and Lautaro Martinez picked up the goals for Argentina against Venezuela, as Argentina posted a clean sheet despite possessing just 40 percent of the game and completing just 77 percent of their passes. Messi and Aguero have not played up to usual standards in this tournament, scoring just one goal apiece, and Argentina was lucky to make it to the knockout rounds. Brazil has played well in this Copa America, and the crowd will be heavily on their side. With that said, I see Argentina taking advantage of a couple of mistakes and posting the upset. Final Score Prediction: Argentina 2, Brazil 1

Chile vs Peru (8:30pm ET)

Peru’s win over Uruguay has to be considered an upset, as they came back from a subpar group stage to advance to the semifinals. Peru was able to hold a Uruguayan attack that features Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez to just three shots on target. However, Peru did not put any shots on target, and they could not move the ball into areas where they could create dangerous chances either. So while Peru might be able to lock down opposing offenses, they have not yet shown the initiative or creativity to get an attack of their own going that is credible, which is why Chile comes in as the favorite here. Chile possessed for 59 percent of the match against Colombia and launched ten shots. The defense held Colombia to just a 70 percent passing accuracy — but the team could not score in 120 minutes of play. They did limit Colombia to just one shot on target, and they have conceded just a pair of goals in four matches. Chile is the defending Copa America champion, and players such as Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal also played in that tournament run. While Peru does have a sticky defense, it’s hard to see them mounting an attack on Chile. Final Score Prediction: Chile 1, Peru 0
