And then there were eight. The Tournament shrank from 16 to 8, and the EURO 2024 betting favorite was literally minutes from elimination, as they trailed Slovakia, 1-0, going into stoppage time at the end of the second half.
Then the Three Lions struck, equalizing a minute into stoppage time and then scoring in extra time to advance, 2-1. Austria, after winning its group, saw its offense disappear in a 2-1 loss to Turkey.
The defending champions (Italy) found themselves dragged all over social media by their fans after falling, 2-0, to Switzerland.
This Friday and Saturday, the four quarterfinal matches will take place, so let’s look at a quick overview of each match, odds and predictions.
EURO 2024 Betting On Quarterfinals | Soccer Odds
Spain +170 vs Germany +180
When: Friday, July 5, 12:00 pm ET
Euro Cup Totals: O/U 2.5
The hosts have rolled through EURO 2024 so far, tied with Spain for the tournament lead with a +8 goal differential.
On defense, they have scored 10 goals while just permitting two in four matches. Over the last two years, Die Mannschaft have scored 33 goals while allowing 26.
Spain had scored nine goals while permitting just one through four matches. Over the last two years, Spain have tallied 47 times while allowing just 11.
For Spain, Fabian Ruiz has two goals and one assist, while Nicholas Williams and Dani Olmo have a goal and an assist each.
Jamal Musiala has three goals for Germany through four matches; Kai Havertz has two goals and an assist, while İlkay Gündoğan has one goal and one assist.
This will be the first real test that either side has faced in this tournament, and I’m going with the hosts at this point.
^Portugal +235 vs France +140
When: Friday, July 5, 3:00 pm ET
Euro Cup Totals: O/U 1.5
The mighty French offense has put up just three goals in four matches so far. They’ve averaged 2.4 per game over the last two years in international play.
They’re in dead last among the teams left in this bracket, but Portugal is seventh, having just scored five goals in four games.
France’s defense leads this tournament, as they have permitted just one goal in the four matches so far. They have only allowed 11 goals (0.6 per game) over the last two years in international play.
Portugal have gotten just one assist out of Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the Golden Boot as the top goalscorer in EURO 2020.
He has said that this will be his last European Championship, so you would think that he would be motivated to score, but the team’s system has struggled to produce chances.
Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes, Bernardo Moto Veiga de Carvalho e Silva and Chico Conceicao have all tallied for the team. Kylian Mbappe has only scored once for Les Bleus in this tournament.
I like Portugal with the value here because the French offense has really scuffled so far.
^England +120 vs Switzerland +270
When: Saturday, July 6, 12:00 pm ET
Euro Cup Totals: O/U 1.5
The Three Lions have just four goals in four matches – including those two after the end of regulation in their win over Slovakia. The Swiss have allowed three goals in four matches, which squares with their average over the last two years.
England has not been particularly prolific in scoring over the last two years, scoring just 35 times (1.9 per match). England have only conceded two goals, while Switzerland have scored seven times in four matches.
England’s hopes will be in the hands of Jude Bellingham (two goals in four matches) and Harry Kane (two goals in four matches). Ivan Toney and Bukayo Saka have also notched assists for England.
It was Bellingham’s epic bicycle kick that drew England level with Slovakia in the round of 16, breaking the backs of the Slovakians and setting the stage for the winner.
For Switzerland, Remo Freuler and Michel Aebischer have a goal and two assists, Ruben Vargas has a goal and an assist, and Xherdan Shaqiri has a goal.
Given the way Switzerland has hung with top teams so far, drawing Germany and ousting Italy, I’m going with the value here.
^Netherlands -175 vs Turkey +450
When: Saturday, July 6, 3:00 pm ET
Euro Cup Totals: O/U 2.5
The Netherlands have scored seven goals in four matches, while Turkey have permitted six over the same stretch.
That’s pretty consistent with the 1.6 goals per game that the Turks have permitted in international play over the last two years.
Turkey’s offense has also been prolific, putting up seven goals, and the Netherlands have allowed four goals so far.
For the Netherlands, Cody Mathes Gakpo has been the leading scorer with three goals and an assist through four matches.
Xavi Simons has a pair of assists, and Wout Weghorst has contributed a key goal in group play as well as an assist.
Donyell Malen also has a pair of goals. For Turkey, Merih Demiral has a pair of goals, Arda Guler and Mert Muldur have a goal each, and Ismail Yuksek has an assist to this point.
Turkey were able to surprise Austria, but they won’t surprise the Netherlands.
