Sinner did win in Cincinnati. He also did fail two drug tests early in 2024, even though he was then exonerated.
Djokovic has won 12 of his last 13 matches, with his only loss in that stretch coming at the Wimbledon final, where Alcaraz ran him out in straight sets.
Alcaraz won the French Open and Wimbledon and now looks to win the three summer majors, a feat that Federer and Djokovic have never done in one calendar year, and that Rafael Nadal last accomplished in 2010.
His loss to Gael Monfils in the first round of Cincinnati was, as he described it, the “worst match” of his career.
Zverev is frustrating to watch, because he will build commanding leads in matches before falling apart at the end. He was up two sets to love at Wimbledon before collapsing.
He lost in the final at Hamburg (his home town) in a tiebreaker on the third set. That disappointment builds and affects a player’s mental stability under pressure.
A dark horse here would be Andrey Rublev, who beat Jannik Sinner in Montreal.
He lost to him in Cincinnati, but the existence of the win is a solid plus. Now, he has to do it in a best-of-five format.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek has been dominating the game in recent years, although more so in Australia and France than at the U.S. Open.
She won here in 2022 but lost in the fourth round here last year. She was also upset in the semifinals of the Olympics women’s singles but bounced back to take bronze.
Since April 2022, she’s basically been ranked #1 nonstop. She has a perfect 5-0 record in Grand Slam finals – the trick is just getting there.
Aryna Sabalenka has won two Grand Slam titles on hardcourt surfaces, but both of those were at the Australian Open (2-23 and 2024).
She made the final at the U.S. Open last year and the semifinals in each of the two previous years.
Coco Gauff became the first American teenager to win a U.S. Open since 1999, when Serena Williams did it.
She also won at Washington and Cincinnati last year (hardcourt warmup tournaments). However, losses in the fourth at Wimbledon, the third at the Olympics, the second round at Toronto and the very first round at Cincinnati are not promising.
Qinwen Zheng has never won a major but made the final at the Australian Open at the start of this year. She also beat Iga Swiatek at the semifinals in the Olympics, so she’s a darker horse on the rise.

Their first hardcourt match was at the final of the ATP Cincinnati Open last year, when Djokovic dropped the opening set, 5-7, and needed tiebreakers to win the second and third.
At the Nitto ATP Finals, Djokovic rolled, 6-3, 6-2. They have split their last two matches, but Wimbledon came on grass, while the Olympic final was played on clay.
Expect these two to appear on opposite ends of the draw, making a semifinal the earliest likely meeting.
Beyond those two, Daniil Medvedev is an interesting value pick. He knocked off top-seeded Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon before falling to Alcaraz in the semifinal.
It’s interesting that Rafael Nadal shows up so high on the odds list after he said to reporters at the Olympics that he thought he would skip the U.S. Open.

The team of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram, though, have earned some fame at the 2024 Summer Games by sending Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal home from the Olympics, beating them in the men’s doubles quarterfinals.
Ram, 40 years old, spoke after the match of the differences between doubles and singles matches. Both of these Americans are world-class players in doubles tennis and have played in Davis Cup matches the last two years.
On the pro tour, though, they have different partners, so it would require a major switch for them to play together at Flushing Meadows.
